A few decades ago, those looking for poker tips had to go to a seedy card room or casino and learn the hard way, by getting their money taken by pros. Now, informative mediums such as The Poker channel’s online video let us see great poker content from the comfort of our own home. I may check out their offering to see what it’s like.

Love the Meek and Weak

Poker players generally conform to certain styles of play. Some are always loose and aggressive as a way to intimidate others. There are players who are continually solid rocks who stick to sound A-B-C online poker, only playing premium hands aggressively. These players tend to be predictable though and most often don’t win big pots because no one will call their bets.

The best player to find at your online poker table is the one who is weak and meek. What that means is these players tend to call a lot rather than initiate bets, and even when they do get a hand, they are unlikely to make any big raises. They are always conservative in their calls and bets.

These are typically newcomers to the game, and you won’t find many of them at any one table. But when you do, these players offer good opportunities for you to build pots through their calling, and when they do you beat you, most likely you have not lost many chips to their low bets.

When you do spot someone who is weak and meek, target that player. Be gracious about winning or losing - complimenting the weak one’s play or crediting your own win to random luck.

When there are other savvy and aggressive players at the table, then you must try to add an element of erratic play to your style to chase the aggressive players so you can isolate the weak and meek player at opportune times.

Flashpoint

Inspired by the real-life Emergency Task Force of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, this taut police drama chronicles the efforts of the Strategic Response Unit (SRU), an elite and highly skilled group of cops charged with rescuing hostages, defusing bombs and breaking up gangs. They work by utilizing their training to get inside the heads of these people in order to make them reach their breaking point. The series title refers to the psychological aspect of the job, which is also the focus of the show: getting inside a suspect’s head and discovering the emotional “flashpoint” that triggered the crisis in the first place, with the hope of diffusing the situation safely and using force only as a last resort.

Flashpoint is a new action series highlighting the aspect of life when family and job come into conflict, how one deals with this. A policeman’s lot is not a happy one. In this series a special-operations cop named Ed Lane (Hugh Dillon) blithely telegraphs his sentiments on work-family balance. Ed has a shaved head and an intense face that suggests he has seen a lot of bad things go down in dark places; he probably wears aviator glasses when he sleeps.

The other team exists of Sgt. Gregory Parker (Enrico Colantoni), the field leader of the team. Further in the team are Julianna “Jules” Callaghan (Amy Jo Johnson), Sam Braddock (David Paetkau), who is the new guy on the team. Then there are Lou “Lewis” Young (Mark Taylor), Mike ‘Spike’ Scarlatti (Sergio Di Zio), Kevin ‘Wordy’ Wordsworth (Michael Cram). Also there is Dr. Amanda Luria (Ruth Marshall), she helps the team with their missions but is not a member of the team.

These are the men and women in the Strategic Response Unit who make Toronto safe. The show is based upon the experiences of the real life of the Toronto Police Emergency Task Force. Even if you are not the kind of person that likes cop shows you should watch it because of the intriguing story line, the cast and for many other reasons.

Newcomers Game

poker players tend to specialize in one game among the many varieties that exist in poker. It is good to know the basics for several formats, such as Seven Card Stud, Five Card Draw, Omaha and other casino online games. People who are new to online poker often wonder which game is best for them to play for learning the basic strategies.

Most often the best choice is Texas Hold ‘Em. It is widely available at online poker sites as well as in live action casinos. Hold ‘Em is both simple and complicated at the same time. Unlike Seven Card Stud, players don’t have to be keep track of the cards dealt out to the other players. Omaha is a nine-card game, which is often played more loosely than Hold ‘Em. Newcomers to this game might find the betting action and bank roll swings too intimidating.

Hold ‘Em allows players to focus on poker strategies while learning some of the more subtle nuances of the game, such as reading opponents’ motivations and hands. Limit Hold ‘Em is more friendly to newcomers who want to play a lot of hands since the betting amounts are limited. Often you can see flops for just the cost of one bet in Limit games as opposed to No Limit, where pre-flop betting can be high and loose, chasing most players away from their hands.

Hold ‘Em offers the best opportunity for beginners to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of poker — hand rankings, drawing odds, position and player psychology.

The November Nine of Poker - Schwartz and Montgomery

2008 WSOP fourth place finisher Ylon Schwartz has made his living the past seventeen years playing chess games in New York City’s Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. A former chess master, originally from Brooklyn, NY, the 38-year old brought 12,525,000 chips to thepoker table and seemed averse to landing in the spotlight, saying that if he won thepoker tournament, he would “go someplace far away where he can’t be found.” Holding Ace 10, Schwartz went all-in against Eastgate’s pocket 5s. The river completed a set for Peter, with nothing materializing on board for Ylon, who took home $3.8 million in fourth place.

The fifth place winner, Scott Montgomery started the final poker table with an impressive 19,690,000 chip stack. The Canadian was teaching English in Japan when he began serious online poker play several years ago. In 2008, he finished fifth in his first $10,000 buy-in event - the WPT LA Poker classic. The 26-year old cashed in three WSOP events this year before making it to the November Nine for the Main Event. He went up against Eastgate’s pocket 6s with the Ace 3, and the flop brought A 4 Q, then another Ace on the turn with the 6d on the river, giving Eastgate a full house to beat Montgomery’s trip Aces. His fifth place finish brought Montgomery a $3,088,012 prize.

When Multi-Tabling Know Your Limit

online poker has made multi-tabling not only possible, but very profitable. If you are playing live you can only play at one poker table at a time, but online you are able to play on as many tables as you like. Some famous online players can play more than twenty Texas Holdem tables at a time, but this can be a huge undertaking for a less experienced player. A good way to see how many tables you can handle at once is to add them one by one. Once you are having a hard time knowing what is happening on each table you should stop adding more tables. Playing very basic poker you don’t have to be aware of every single move at every table but if you have too many tables going at once and you become flustered you might end up making mistakes as simple as clicking the wrong button and end up losing a lot of money unnecessarily. Also note that if you are playing a Stud game (Stud High, Stud High-Low, or Razz) multi-tabling is much more difficult because to be a successful stud game player you have to be aware of the cards that all the other players were dealt. If you are playing multiple tables it will be much more difficult to play these games effectively. As far as multi-tabling goes, it is usually smarter to stick to Texas Holdem because you don’t have to see quite as much of the action at the table to play successfully.
