Gender Incompatibility

What makes two people incompatible? How do you recognize the elements of incompatibility?

Many lucky relationships take off like a rocket and, in spite of occasional ups and downs, last a lifetime. However, a great number of relationships don’t fare so well. Why? What makes two people incompatible? How do you recognize the elements of incompatibility? And how do you avoid getting entangled in a no-win situation?

These and other such crucial questions will not be answered in this article. Mainly, because of space problems. Secondly, because I haven’t the faintest idea what the answers are. If I did, I’d buy a big couch, a good clock, and bill clients by the nanoseconds.

But analyzing a few case histories may at least help shed some light on the matter. After that, who knows, the answers may be just around the corner.

One case worth recounting is Bernie’s. (Bernie was not his real name. His parents never told him his real name.) Bernie went out with this girl for four months before realizing that the only thing he had in common with her was a Maytag repairman. In the end, he said the relationship taught him that when a “spin cycle” begins to look more like a “slow rinse” it’s time to hang it up to dry. Now he’s going out with someone more compatible, and he’s bubbling with joy.

Then, there was this married couple who, although both were sports buffs, was incompatible because, ironically, they had something else in common — both had to have the last word. Watching them argue was like watching a baseball game go into eighty-seven innings. Hardly a day passed that the “game” was “rained out.” One heated argument resulted in the tossing of all their china ware at each other — they referred to it as “The World Series.” Actually, in a strange sort of way, they seemed to enjoy their shouting and carrying on. But the marriage almost ended in divorce when she got laryngitis. Their marriage counselor recommended a live-in umpire. Eventually, they learned to adjust to their problem — now, before every argument, they sing The Star-Spangled Banner.

Another couple got divorced for religious reasons — she worshipped money, he had none.

To assist in the analysis of the problems of incompatibility, I decided to enlist the help of an old friend, a world-renowned psychologist, a genius without equal, a legend on her own couch, a master of treacherous love affairs, Dr. Tootsie Krestheimer. (Her mentor is the noted sexologist Dr. Ruthy Westheimer with the heavy German accent.) It is reported that in her entire career no couple who came to her for counseling ever got divorced before their therapy bills were paid up. If that’s not a phenomenal feat, I don’t know what is.

My visit with Dr. Krestheimer began with a direct question: “What can you tell me about incompatibility?”

“Vell, I tell you saamsing,” she responded in her heavy Chinese-Bulgarian accent, “faanny you shoood esk about incompaataabeelity. Just lest veek vee did an experiment on dis saabject vit a particle accelerator. You know vat is dis a particle accelerator?” I said, “Physicists use that. Aren’t you a psychologist?” Impatiently, she replied, “I dabble in everysing! Jaast enswer ze qvestion!” I said, “Yes. It’s an apparatus physicists use to accelerate subatomic particles to high velocities to determine what other particles or energy will be released upon collision.” She said, “Very good. You maast hev vone at home.” I said, “I have two — one in the kitchen, one in the bedroom.” She continued, “Zo, instead of subatomic particles, vee pud in a male und a female rat vit contrasting personalities, und vee accelerated zem to sree [3] times ze speed zat zey voood normally run to get a piece of cheese.” I interrupted, “What do you call contrasting personalities in rats?” She said, “Vone eats aap ze whole cheese aaz soon aaz you give it to heem, und ze ozer vone bakes ah shtrudel vit it.” I said, “I see. Those are definitely contrasting personalities.”

She went on: “After a few minutes, I und my rat specialist heard ze female rat sqveeking. Ze specialist tells me she vas saying, ‘I’m not enjoying zis trip! Zis vasn’t my idea. Zis is ze lest trip I’m taking vit you. Ven vee get beck, I vant to speak to my lawyer.” Dr. Krestheimer slammed down hard on her desk and exclaimed, “Zo, zere you hev it! Ze proof is in ze shtrudel!” I said, “You mean, pudding.” She said, “Please, dun’t mix aap my experiments.” I asked, “So what does this prove?” She said, “It proooves zat ven two people are incompaateeble, vone mate shoood not pressure ze ozer vone to go on a trip if he or she does not vant to go.”

Not quite grasping how she arrived at this conclusion, I demanded, “A rat squeaking in an a particle accelerator? How does this prove anything?” Angrily, she shouted, “Eenaaf of zis! Get out of my office! Vat do you know about rats?! You dun’t even know how to bake ah shtrudel! In ze time I vasted vit you I coood hev made eenaaf maaney to buy a brend new couch und sree more condos! Out!”

Only several hours after leaving Dr. Krestheimer’s office did I realize the implications of her experiment. Reading between the lines, I deduced that incompatibility is not necessarily irreversible — two people with vastly different temperaments can learn to adjust to one another’s idiosyncrasies. With this new awareness, I set out to explore relationships which I had previously considered unsuitable.

I am now going out with a girl who is seven inches taller than me, speaks only Slovak, and doesn’t go out on a third date unless you open a joint account and write her into your will. How do we get along on a date? Well, I keep my right two tires slightly deflated so at least in the car we appear to be the same height. But trying to have an intimate, heart-to-heart talk through an interpreter is not easy. And then, trying to find a movie which I like, and she likes, and the interpreter likes, and her lawyer likes, does put somewhat of a strain on the relationship. But when you get group discounts wherever you go, who cares.

All You Need To Know About Work-Related Stress

November 2004’s publication of the Health and Safety Executive’s new Management Standards for work-related stress has focused the minds of many organisations on this increasingly serious workplace hazard. But what are the differences between pressure and stress? What are the telltale signs and symptoms? What’s the current legal position? And what role should managers be playing in helping to combat work-related stress?

Pressure or stress?

Many people are confused about what stress is, and in particular the difference between pressure and stress:

• Pressure is the stimulation and challenge we need to achieve job satisfaction and self-esteem.

• Stress is a reaction to continued excessive pressure or responsibility when we feel inadequate and unable to cope.

Ever since prehistoric times, the ’stress response’ has been a mechanism that our bodies have used to help us cope with danger. As soon as we’re aware that something is threatening us, our brain sends messages to our nervous system to either get ready to stand and fight, or run away. Unfortunately, whereas in Stone Age times we would usually have time to recover from the life or death encounters that triggered the response, in the modern world we’re confronted with a continuous stream of ’stressors’ that our bodies perceive as threats, and react to accordingly.

Today, these could include financial pressures, fear of redundancy, overwork, deadline pressures or an important business presentation. The constant, ongoing pressure resulting from these stressors is different to the more immediate dangers that our stress response was designed to cope with. And it’s at the point at which our bodies cannot recover from these pressures that we can begin to experience stress.

The scale of the problem

According to the latest figures from the HSE:

• about half a million people in the UK experience work-related stress at a level they believe is making them ill

• up to 5 million people in the UK feel ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ stressed by their work

• work-related stress costs society about £3.7 billion every year (1995/6 prices)

Telltale signs and symptoms

Depending on the individual, stress can manifest itself in many different ways. The table provides a summary some of the most common physical, psychological and behavioural reactions.

Typical Stress Reactions

Physical Psychological Behavioural

Palpitations, awareness of heart beating, chest pains Mood swings Susceptibility to accidents

Diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence Panic attacks Changes in eating habits

Indigestion Morbid thoughts Increased smoking

Loss of libido Low self-esteem Restlessness, hyperactivity, foot tapping

Muscle tension Irritability Over-dependence on drugs and/or alcohol

Menstrual problems Feeling of helplessness Changes in sleep patterns

Tiredness Impatience Out of character behaviour

Breathlessness Anxiety Voluntary withdrawal from supportive relationships

Sweating Crying Disregard for personal appearance

Tightness in the chest Cynicism Loss of confidence

Skin and scalp irritation, eczema and psoriasis Withdrawal into daydreams Sullen attitude

Increased susceptibility to allergies Intrusive thoughts or images Clenched fists

Frequent colds, flu or other infections Nightmares Obsessive mannerisms

Rapid weight gain or loss Suicidal feelings Increased absence from work

Backache, neck pain Paranoid thinking Aggressiveness

Migraines and tension headaches Guilt Poor time management

The current legal position

As well as acting as an unnecessary drain on the economy, workplace stress is also the subject of increasing government legislation:

• Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act (1974) lays out the broad principles of an employer’s ‘duty of care’ to ensure, as far as reasonably possible, the health (including mental health), safety and welfare of all employees whilst at work, and to create safe and healthy working systems. This general duty of care includes pre-emptive action to prevent and control work-related stress.

• Many employers do not realise that since the publication of the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations (1999), all organisations with five or more employees have also had a legal duty to conduct regular risk assessments of workplace hazards, including psychosocial hazards such as stress. These assessments should then be used to identify and either avoid or reduce such hazards.

• On 3 November 2004, the HSE published its new Management Standards for work-related stress - designed to help ensure that organisations address key aspects of workplace stress (or ‘risk factors’) including demands, control, support, relationships, role and change.

• While the Standards themselves do not impose a legal duty on organisations, breach of the applicable regulations could lead to criminal prosecution, or claims for compensation through the civil courts.

So what can managers do?

The Management Standards are all about highlighting potential areas of stress, and encouraging employers to take action to reduce these - with the goal of matching the performance of the top 20% of organisations that are already doing this. If you think your organisation may be experiencing problems due to workplace stress, it will therefore need to take a proactive approach to tackling it:

• Many organisations face deadline pressures or sudden changes in work demands, and employees need the necessary training and experience to meet the ever-increasing demands made on them. Examples include training in resilience, time management, communication skills, and - for managers in particular - stress awareness enabling them to recognise the early warning signs of stress in themselves and others.

• Where employees have been forced to take time away from work as a result of stress, their rehabilitation back to work needs to be carefully managed.

• For those employees who require specialist support, Employee Assistance Programmes and counselling services are a vital component in employee wellbeing.

• Training in communication (and particularly active listening) skills is essential to help ensure that managers are aware of their team members’ problems and in a position to offer early interventions to resolve these.

Ultimately, reducing workplace stress is largely a matter of common sense and good management practice, and simply requires employers and employees to work together for the common good. Both share a joint responsibility for reducing stress - which, when this is successful, can help employees to enjoy their work more, and businesses to thrive as a result.

10 Steps to Getting What You Want

There is a well-known saying, ‘Ask and you shall receive.’ Young
children often have this theory perfected to a fine art. They
keep asking till they get what they want. This demonstrates our
innate determination, faith and expectation. Asking for what you
desire can be a great opening to new opportunities.

To increase your chances of success it is often valuable to
reflect upon the most appropriate people to ask for assistance.

1.Get in touch with your own intuition and check if what you are
desiring is for your greatest benefit. One of the ways to do
this is to imagine that you already have what you desire. Then
ask yourself: How do I feel? is this a worthy goal? Does it
affect people in an uplifting way? 2In order to get a clearer
message try meditation, reflective thinking, yoga, praying,
dancing, relaxation, daydreaming etc. 3When you are sure of your
intention, make a list of the people you can ask for assistance.
This is where mentoring often comes into play. 4Determine that
you are going to do what it takes to achieve your intention. 5Do
research. Find out as much as you can about the people you want
help from. 6Make a list of what you think they can help you
with. Most successful people are extremely busy, so it will be
in your best interest to be well prepared. 7Link how they can
help you to how you can help them. 8Ask for less rather then
more, especially in the beginning. If you want them to mentor
you, ask if they would be willing to spend 10 minutes a month
giving you advice. 9When you finally decide to call or meet
somebody create an atmosphere that supports you. Wear something
that makes you feel good, have all your questions ready, affirm
to yourself that you are a success. Be positive. 10Even if you
receive a refusal, congratulate yourself for giving it a go. You
have succeeded because you tried. It is an important step in the
right direction. Then choose someone else and try again. You can
only gain.

Do You Need A Change Of Mind?

Napoleon Hill, the famous inspirational writer, once met a reader who became a millionaire after reading one of his books. The book, Think and Grow Rich, transformed Bill McCall of Australia from rags to riches.

When Bill was 19 years old, he sold hides and skins. He failed miserably. Two years later, he ran for Federal Congress. Again, he failed. In desperation, Bill went to the library to read about success principles. There, he found Hill’s book.

Although he read the book three times, he failed to see how to use the success principles. Then, during the fourth reading, something shifted within him, a flash of inspiration, and his life changed.

Years later, after meeting the author, Bill McCall, now the Honorable William V. McCall, now a director of 22 family-owned businesses, and now a man as rich as the people whom he had once read about, narrated the moment his life fell into place.

“I was reading Think and Grow Rich for the fourth time while walking leisurely along a business street in Sydney. And then it happened! It happened suddenly. I stopped in front of a meat market and glanced up. And in that fraction of a second I had a flash of inspiration.

“You see, I was reading Chapter Four entitled ‘Autosuggestion.’ The subheading was ‘The Medium for Influencing the Subconscious Mind.’ Now I remember that when I was a boy my father read aloud from Emile Coue’s little book Self-Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion.”

“It was you,” Bill said to Napoleon Hill, “who pointed out in your book that if Emile Coue was successful in helping individuals avoid sickness and in bringing the sick back to good health, through conscious autosuggestion, autosuggestion could also be used to acquire riches or anything else one might desire. ‘Get rich through autosuggestion’: that was my great discovery. It was a new concept to me.

“You know: conscious autosuggestion is the agency of control through which an individual may voluntarily feed his subconscious mind on thoughts of a creative nature, or, by neglect, permit thoughts of a destructive nature to find their way into the rich garden of his mind.

“When you read aloud twice daily the written statement of your desire for money with emotion and concentrated attention, and you see and feel yourself already in possession of the money, you communicate the object of your desire directly to your subconscious mind. Through repetition of this procedure, you voluntarily create thought habits which are favorable to your efforts to transmute desire into its monetary equivalent.

“Let me say it again: It is most important that when you read aloud the statement of your desire through which you are endeavoring to develop a money consciousness, you read with emotion and strong feeling.

“Your ability to use the principles of autosuggestion will depend very largely upon your capacity to concentrate upon a given desire until that desire becomes a burning desire.

“When I arrived home, out of breath for running, I immediately set down at the dining room table and wrote: ‘My definite major aim is to be a millionaire by 1960.’”

The Honorable William V. McCall, the youngest person to be a member of the house of parliament, achieved his definite major aim to be a millionaire four days before his deadline.

What Not To Do - The Ways to Drive Success Away From Yourself

Now on to the tip of the day. Last night watched The Apprentice season finale. I have a few shows each week that I like. As a rule I hate ‘reality shows’ but I do like The Apprentice.

Well it was down to only two people, Randall and Rebbecca. After hiring Randall, Donald Trump asked Randall a amazing question. Donald asked if Randall thought that he should hire Rebbecca also. What an unexpected question!

They wanted to work on different projects, so it would not have cost Randal a thing. He could have opened the door for a friend (at least a friendly acquaintance). He had won. No one could deny him that. He really had a chance to help someone with no ill effect to him, and secure a life long ally in Rebbecca. (For those of you who do not watch the show, Rebbecca proved to be very loyal even when it almost got her kicked off the show.)

So with all of this sitting in his lap and the chance to really do a good turn, and secure a life long business ally, Randal let vanity get the best of him. He said, there should only be one apprentice.

Loyalty is obtained through giving loyalty. Wealth through giving wealth. By showing a bit of loyalty and helping someone achieve a dream, Randal could have shown Mr. Trump that he was someone to be trusted. He would not turn on his friends/business acquaintances. He could have shown traits that would suggest to Mr. Trump that he is not only brilliant and well educated (and he is) but that he understands that he is not the focus of the business.

Remember that, you are not the focus to the other person, they are. You have to give the rings, which means you need to be generous in your dealings with others. Help others when you can, especially if it doesn’t cost you anything.

Someone told me one time that if someone needs something and it means nothing to you, then you should give it to them. I agree.

If you can help someone advance, or bring them with you as you advance, then do it. Assuming, of course, they deserve the position.

So remember, give the rings, as the Barbarian chieftains of old would do. You can’t help everyone, and you have to help yourself first, but after that don’t be stingy with your time, influence or money. It will all come back several times.

With that I will say:

Get the Barbarian Mind Set and keep it. Stay tr to yourself and your family, the rest will take care of itself.

In October of 2005 he released his book “The Barbarian’s Guide to Success” and is dedicated to helping other realize their dreams. He is a straight forward, politically incorrect, figure and makes very little time for detractors. He often says “So many ‘coaches’ have made their money by coaching. I do everything I coach.
