Benefits of Working Out on a Treadmill

Treadmill training has become increasingly popular over the last decade. Before then, treadmills for the home were not made with high quality parts. They were on the noisy side, not sturdy, and a cheap piece of equipment. But times have changed and an abundance of marathon trainers have turned to indoor training on treadmills.

1. Safety Issues - The more I read on outdoor running, the more inclined I am to walk or run indoors. You need to be aware when running in the winter months. The cold, icy conditions and blowing snow. Not only do you need to be aware of these conditions for your own balance but also watching out for winter drivers and snowplows on the road. One story I read was about a Canadian runner who had gone out for his run and was struck by a snowplow. It took him 2 months to recover.

Some police officials advise not to wear an MP3 player or any type of stereo device, so you are completely aware of your surrounding. Many runners who do trails and outdoor running run with a buddy, run in well-lit environments, use a dog, or run in public places. Whereas in a gym, you are surrounded by motivating people, you can read, watch a video, listen to your MP3 player and be done you’re run in a comfortable environment. Most beginner runners like the people around them. Some people who run outdoors by themselves find it lonely.

2. Heat - You need to watch the heat when running outdoors. Having the sun blazing down on you is a lot harder on your body, and can cause dizziness, dehydration and possibly sunstroke. You’ll be able to work out longer when you’re running in a cool environment, like an air-conditioned building. Most treadmills provide a great water bottle storage area, so no need to carry water with you as you run.

3. Family Time and Job Schedules are a huge factor for working adults and raising young children.

A large number of young families who have just had babies look to buy a treadmill at home. Time restrictions with a baby and work demands make getting to the gym harder than ever. Having fitness equipment at home allows you to step on your treadmill whenever you have a few moments. Put the baby in the swing or cradle and many times they will fall asleep hearing the consistent rhythm of the treadmill sound. If your job is high demanding, you don’t need to miss an important client call if you were running on your treadmill in the office.

4. Injuries- Treadmills have some cushioning built into the bed, which means less pounding for your legs.

According to Ken Sparks, PH. D exercise physiologist at Cleveland State University says there is less pounding on the legs from a treadmill than the pavement so you are less prone to injuries. Running on concrete and asphalt is hard on the joints. He also points out that slopes on the road force you to overpronate. This is when the feet rotate too far inward causing shin splits and other leg problems.

5. Programs and inclines- Treadmills offer a great amount of programs and inclines. For many runners, they would need to look for the perfect running trail with just the right incline if they were training for a certain race. With a program you can just punch in a number, with the incline and enjoy your workout. Gradually adding more or less of an incline when needed. It’s a very precise way of training. Some treadmills offer racecourse programs, so you can train for inclines at different times in your route.

Key Treadmills - The Best Option for A Durable Treadmill?

Keys treadmills are a good quality range of treadmills offering brilliant motor warranties and some nice features. They are priced between $1,000 to $2,300 so offer a decent machine at a cost effective price.

The best feature of keys treadmills is the motor warranty which is set to 10 years. One of the most important parts of a treadmill is the motor and if it breaks down the repair cost can usually be quite hefty. With a 10 year warranty you will have no such worries. This also provides testament to the durability of these machines.

If you are overweight or expect to be using the treadmill a lot then a keys treadmill might be worth looking at further.

What amazes me is although the machines have a 10 year motor warranty they are only priced in the mid-price range. A lot of commercial treadmills that have 10 years motor warranties are priced $5,000 and up. Some even approach $10,000

Keys Fitness, manufacture all their treadmills in the USA but import parts from overseas to help them stay competitive. As a result their machines may not be as high a quality compared to other machines made solely in the US where an eye can be kept over the production process.

Advantages

The price tag of these machines range from as little as $1,000 and as high as $2,300. For this price, you’ll get a 10 year motor warranty and a lifetime warranty on frames. If durability is your number one concern then Keys treadmills offer a serious advantage over other brands.

Disadvantages

As they are not made entirely in the USA their structural quality may not be as good as other better known brands. Also $2,000 might be a bit steep for some people so you might be better off looking at cheaper treadmills that still have a decent motor warranty (about 3 years).

Recommendation

Although this brand is known for being of average structural quality, newer models have been showing some improvements. For most people a 10 year warranty is not essential 3 years will suffice. I recommend for people considering a Key treadmill to look at other brands with a lower motor warranty but better overall quality.

The Cool Down - Recover Faster & Avoid Injury!

Many people dismiss the cool down as a waste of time, or simply
unimportant. In reality the cool down is just as important as
the warm up, and if you want to stay injury free, it’s vital.

Although the warm up and cool down are just as important as each
other, they are important for different reasons. While the main
purpose of warming up is to prepare the body and mind for
strenuous activity, cooling down plays a different role.

Why Cool Down?

The main aim of the cool down is to promote recovery and return
the body to a pre exercise, or pre-workout level. During a
strenuous workout your body goes through a number of stressful
processes, muscle fibers, tendons and ligaments get damaged, and
waste products build up within your body. The cool down,
performed properly, will assist your body in its repair process.

One area the cool down will help with is “post exercise muscle
soreness.” This is the soreness that is usually experienced the
day after a tough workout. Most people experience this after
having a lay-off from exercise, or at the beginning of their
sports season. I remember running a half marathon with limited
preparation, and finding it difficult to walk down steps the
next day because my quadriceps were so sore.

Post exercise muscle soreness is caused by a number of things.
Firstly, during exercise, tiny tears called micro tears develop
within the muscle fibers. These micro tears cause swelling of
the muscle tissues which in turn puts pressure on the nerve
endings and results in pain.

Secondly, when exercising, your heart is pumping large amount of
blood to the working muscles. This blood is carrying both oxygen
and nutrients that the working muscles need. When the blood
reaches the muscles the oxygen and nutrients are used up. Then
the force of the contracting (exercising) muscles pushes the
blood back to the heart where it is re-oxygenated.

However, when the exercise stops, so does the force that pushes
the blood back to the heart. This blood, as well as waste
products like lactic acid, stays in the muscles, which in turn
causes swelling and pain. This process is often referred to as
“blood pooling.”

So, the cool down helps all this by keeping the blood
circulating, which in turn helps to prevent blood pooling and
also removes waste products from the muscles. This circulating
blood also brings with it the oxygen and nutrients needed by the
muscles, tendons and ligaments for repair.

The Key Parts of an Effective Cool Down

Now that we know what the cool down does and why it is so
important, let’s have a look at the structure of an effective
cool down. There are three key elements, or parts, which should
be included to ensure an effective and complete cool down. They
are;

1.Gentle exercise;

2.Stretching; and

3.Re-fuel.

All three parts are equally important and any one part should
not be neglected or thought of as not necessary. All three
elements work together to repair and replenish the body after
exercise.

To follow are two examples of effective cool downs. The first is
an example of a cool down used by a professional athlete. The
second is typical of someone who simply exercises for general
health, fitness and fun.

Example Cool Down Routines

Example 1: - For the Professional •10 to 15 minutes of
easy exercise. Be sure that the easy exercise resembles the type
of exercise that was done during your workout. For example, if
your workout involved a lot of running, cool down with easy
jogging or walking. •Include some deep breathing as part of your
easy exercise to help oxygenate your system. •Follow with about
20 to 30 minutes of stretching. Static stretching and PNF
stretching is best at this time. •Re-fuel. Both fluid and food
are important. Drink plenty of water, plus a good quality sports
drink. The best type of food to eat straight after a workout is
that which is easily digestible. Fruit is a good example.

Example 2: - For the Amateur •3 to 5 minutes of easy
exercise. Be sure that the easy exercise resembles the type of
exercise that was done during your workout. For example, if your
workout involved a lot of running, cool down with easy jogging
or walking. •Include some deep breathing as part of your easy
exercise to help oxygenate your system. •Follow with about 5 to
10 minutes of stretching. Static stretching and PNF stretching
is best at this time. •Re-fuel. Both fluid and food are
important. Drink plenty of water, plus a good quality sports
drink. The best type of food to eat straight after a workout is
that which is easily digestible. Fruit is a good example.

Getting serious about your cool down and following the above
examples will make sure you recover quicker from your workouts
and stay injury free.

Home Gyms Review: 5 Tips To Get The Most From Your Home Gym

A home gym can help you build an incredible looking body,
skyrocket your metabolism and shave years off your age.

If you choose wisely, you’ll have all the tools you need to
accomplish these goals (and more). But not everyone knows where
to start or how to get the most from a home gym.

When clients ask me about buying home gym equipment, here are 5
things I tell them to get the most from their purchase: 1) Buy a
well rounded piece of equipment:

Unless you have hundreds of square feet in your home to dedicate
to multiple pieces of equipment, you should look for a home gym
that covers all the major exercises (including the ones you
don’t like), such as chest, back, legs (hamstrings &
quadriceps), shoulders, biceps and triceps.

2) Make sure your home gym is stable:

There’s a saying, ‘You get what you pay for.’ Most of the
inexpensive home gyms you buy from a local department store have
very narrow bases, so they tend to rock. Stay away from home
gyms that do not have a good stable base.

For a basic rule of thumb, look at home gyms that are more
’square’ or ‘as high as they are wide’. As an example, you won’t
want a home gym that 10ft high x 2 ft wide x 2 ft deep, unless
you are going to anchor it to a concrete floor.

3) Put your home gym in a place you will use it:

If you leave your home gym in a room you normally don’t go into
to, odds are high that you aren’t going to use it. The more
inviting the room where you place your equipment, the more
likely you will use it (how many of us really want to work out
in a dungeon?).

If there’s only one place you can place your home gym, then work
on the room. Maybe add a coat of paint or put up pictures that
inspire you. Add a stereo system or a wall mounted television.
By making the room inviting and inspiring, you’ll ensure that
workouts will be enjoyable.

4) Make a simple & short workout routine:

Don’t go making or using ‘Mr. Or Ms. Olympia’ home gym workouts.
That’s the first big mistake that people make when they first
get their equipment. Instead, start by making a workout that is
only 30 to 45 minutes long. That’s less than a 1 hour TV show.

Do this workout 3 to 5 days a week. Remember to work all your
muscles (not just the ones you like) for optimum results. It
helps to keep a record of your workouts on paper so you can see
just how far you’ve come.

If you’re stuck on what to do, don’t worry. Many home gyms come
with beginner workouts. But again, don’t go all out and kill
yourself the first few workouts - start from where you are and
build on it. Consistency is key for a killer body.

5) Write your workout days on the calendar:

Like any important appointment, make an appointment with your
home gym. You need to make the effort to put yourself, your body
and your health first - especially at the beginning stages.
Experts tell us it takes 3 to 6 weeks before actions become
habit. Once you’ve built the habit of working out, it will get
easier.

To help you stick to your exercise appointment, get loved ones
to encourage you and make you accountable. Once you get past the
8-week mark, you’ll feel (and look) so great you’ll wonder why
you didn’t get a home gym sooner.

So those are 5 ways to get the most out of your home gym
equipment. If you want to know which home gyms are my picks for

Best Home Treadmill: 4 Things To Look For To Find The Best Treadmill For Your Home

Choosing the best home treadmill can be confusing as you
sift through all of the options, new models, and brand name
‘deals’. Too often, people get caught up in all the ‘Goodies’ a
treadmill offers them that they miss the fact that the treadmill
doesn’t have the basic essentials of a quality unit.

By knowing the 4 basic essentials of a quality home treadmill,
you’ll be able to quickly sift through the treadmill deals and
choose the best home treadmill for you.

The 4 basic essentials to a quality treadmill are:

#1 - High Powered, Well Built Motor

Since the motor is the most expensive part of the treadmill to
fix, a good motor is essential to your treadmill. Try to find at
least a motor power of 2.0 HP, preferably higher.

Remember that a 1.5 HP motor has to work twice as hard as a 3.0
HP motor - so it will burn out long before the 3.0 HP motor.

Also, not all motors are built with the same quality parts. Look
for a good brand name and a long motor warranty to give you
clues as to the quality of the motor.

#2 - Excellent Cushioning

There’s not enough said about cushioning and it is so important
in a home treadmill. A good cushioning system protects your
joints, ligaments and back. A poor cushioning system can result
in injury and pain.

I know of one woman who bought a cheaper brand of treadmill and
then ran on it. Within 6 months, she had damaged her hips so
badly that it hurt her to even walk on the treadmill. You
definitely don’t want that!

Make sure your treadmill offers an excellent cushioning system -
especially if you’ll be running!

#3 - Extensive Warranty

You want to protect your investment so a solid treadmill
warranty is a must. A good treadmill warranty will cover the
frame for at least 30 years, the motor for at least 5 years and
other parts and labor for about 1 year. Anything above that and
you’ve got an excellent warranty.

But a warranty isn’t just to protect your investment – a good
warranty lets you know about the quality of the treadmill parts.

Treadmill companies do not include warranties because they think
they’ll have to fix the treadmill within that time frame. They
know that they WON’T have to fix them within that time frame
because the quality of parts used are high. So if you find a
treadmill with a 10 year motor warranty, you KNOW it’s a quality
built motor. If the motor warranty is only 90 days
however…that tells you something.

#4 - Quality Brand Name

Certain brand names have a reputation for building a high
quality home treadmill. Other brand names may be well-known but
they don’t necessarily have a good reputation.

Choose a treadmill that has a solid, trusted brand name. Not
sure which brands are good? Check out expert ratings and ‘Best
Buys’ on various treadmill review sites and/or magazines. You’ll
start to see a trend where certain brand names come up
frequently. These brands are the quality treadmill manufacturers.

So those are 4 basic essentials of a good home treadmill:

- High Powered, Well Built Motor - Excellent Cushioning -
Extensive Warranty - Quality Brand Name

Knowing these, you can sift through the treadmills available and
easily locate the best treadmill for your home.

Yoga in Practice: Helping Negative People - Part 2

Selfishness, hoarding, and gluttony are hard to sleep with.
Greed drives us insane, and over consumption causes grief.
Helping others does not require money. Selfless service will
help those in need just fine. Sometimes an encouraging word, a
thank you, or a compliment, is worth more than money. This is
because you showed recognition and gave a feeling that becomes
self worth.

How many times do people hold back on giving thanks, praise, and
mutual respect to others? No wonder the divorce rates are so
high in some cultures. It is because no one wants to give,
forgive, or try to understand anyone including their wife,
husband, or family members.

No one wants to accept the blame for anything. Everything is the
fault of some ‘wrong doer.’ We are living in the new age of
blame. How often do you hear about teachers and parents blamed
for trying to do their job?

When you see someone change his or her attitude around for the
best, it does restore your faith in humanity. If we cannot
forgive, we become negative and hostile, too. Below is a formula
for helping negative people, and you may learn a little more
about Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga, (the path of devotion), in the
process.

Smiling is contagious and puts the unhappy person “off guard.”
Remember that negativity is also contagious, but smiling is an
“equalizer.” It is very hard to get mad at a happy person. Think
pleasant thoughts and do not let yourself come under the spell
of gloom. It is easier for most of us to smile than to frown all
the time.

Listen emphatically, but do not take problems that are not yours
to heart. I know a person whose favorite saying is, “It’s not my
problem.” Always remember that you do not have to take on the
problems of the world, on your shoulders, to be a good listener.

If you feel this person is dragging you down, give yourself a
break. Just because you want to help - that doesn’t mean you
have to write a suicide pack with him or her. You have to know
your own tolerance level for being around pessimism. Too much
pessimism and negativity can have an adverse effect on anyone.

Look at “wartime behavior’ as a prime example. People are
scarred for life by atrocities, brutality, poverty, starvation,
battle fatigue, constant fear, and imprisonment. This is a haven
for negativity to flourish in. This is much like the mind-set of
a pessimist.

The Way You Perform Your Workout Program

Workout or exercise is important both for your body and mind but
have you ever considered how you’re actually doing your workout
program? Whatever you do, if you are involved in a sport or
activity that has potential for injury, specifically head
injury, use the proper equipment no matter what anyone else
tells you. For example, if you are involved with skateboarding
and this is how you stay in shape, good for you! However, you
need to wear protective gear such as a helmet, gloves, knee
guards, etc. Most people think that something significant has to
happen in order to get a head in jury. Unfortunately, that is a
huge misconception. The truth is that falling one foot onto the
pavement and hitting your head is enough to cause serious injury
or death. This is the time to put your pride aside and think of
safety first.

Remember to take a break

People who exercise need to take a break now and then. If you
are actively involved in a workout regimen but you are getting
ready to go on vacation for two weeks or have an extra heavy
workload for your job over the next couple of weeks, instead of
just stopping your routine completely during that time, just cut
back. Even reducing your workout by 50% will give you the break
you need but also make it much easier to get back to full speed
than if you just stopped altogether.

Make yourself ready to run

Before any exercise, always remember to warm up. If you are a
runner, before you go out for your actual run, take two to five
minutes to jog in place to prepare. You will find that you have
a better run

Cool yourself Down

Cooling down after exercise is just as important as warming up
before you start. Once you have completed your workout, take
five to 10 minutes to walk, or stretch to allow your body to
cool down. This is very important for the muscles and joints and
for the heart and lung.

Check your pulse regularly

It is a good rule to keep track of your pulse rate as you
exercise,. You can pick up an inexpensive pulse measure at any
local Wal-mart, K-Mart, or sporting good store. This will
measure your heart rate to ensure you are staying within a
healthy range. The rate is measured by counting the beats of
your heart in a set amount of time, usually about 15 to 20
seconds, and then multiplying the number of beats to get your
number of beats per minute. For example, if your pulse at 20
seconds were 40, since there are 60 seconds in a minute, you
would take 40 times three for a total rate per minute of 120.

Exercise in the summertime

Exercising outdoors can be refreshing and fun but it can also
cause problems, especially in the summertime if you do not
follow some simple rules. Make sure you are drinking enough
water, about 16 ounces every 30 minutes, before, during, and
after exercise. Some sports drinks have special ingredients that
help replenish fluids to prevent dehydration.
