Crystal Radio Sets are Alive and Kicking
Author: Ned Norris
I was brought up under strict conditions. Bedtime was at a certain rigid time every night. Lights out meant no reading; it meant sleep. It certainly did not include listening to radio broadcasts.
But as a child of thirteen, I discovered the delights of the
crystal set. It was a frustrating affair. The workings of it have remained a complete mystery. How, I wondered then, could a lump of gray mineral possibly capture radio waves and do so without a battery?
Now, several decades later, the answers are easy to find on the Internet - here I quickly discover that crystal sets, and the parts to make them, are readily available today - even though they look vastly different from the crude thing I had. In comparison, today’s look…well…positively modern.
To my amazement, according to Google there are 81,200 pages that contain the phrase “crystal set”.
There is even The Xtal Set Society http://www.midnightscience.com which says it is “dedicated to once again building and experimenting with radio electronics.” It advertises books, parts and kits. One kit is called the Quaker Oat Box Radio Pack. It contains one roll of 24-gauge hook-up wire (100 feet), one germanium diode, one 47,000-ohm resistor, one alligator clip, and one crystal earplug. Sounds just about as basic as my old set…but I don’t remember the other instructions that come with this kit: “You will need to provide your own antenna wire and oatmeal box.”
The advertised price is $8.95. Do some reverse inflation calculations and you will know better than I now remember roughly how much I paid for my set back in 1947. Any money I had in those days was ‘earned’ by not spending my lunch money at school, so I know the set I had was dirt-cheap.
Radio Shack sells starter kits too. Describing a project for “beginning experimenters” at http://www.thebest.net/wuggy/rs99fun.htm one reviewer said “the Radio Shack crystal radio kit Cat. No. 28-178 is a pretty fair starter set. It does work, and some simple modifications will enhance its performance.” When he wrote four years ago, the price was $9.99. After some modifications, which he describes, he was able to listen to New York, Netherlands Antilles, Cuba, Charlotte NC, Chicago, “and a few others”. What a difference a
coil of wire for an antenna makes!
For some fascinating photographs, you might want to take a look at http://www.schmarder.com/radios/crystal With their knobs and dials for tuning in a favorite station they make me positively envious!
There was no simple method for tuning my set. I remember there was a contact of some sort, and that by moving this minuscule distances across the crystal you could, with much patience, tune in a radio station. Usually, it was faint. Fiddle with the contact and the signal would be lost and found again many times
before a signal strong enough to enjoy came in. And it would often disappear in the middle of a show for no obvious reason.
“He aims and fires, but he misses…and that was his last bullet. The killer reaches for him, the axe raised in his other hand, and …” fizzle, crackle, silence. Mutter, mutter (the latter being me)!
Now I understand I needed to pay much more attention to installing a good antenna - a 50-foot piece of wire outside the house and as high as possible - and that I needed a good ground. But as a 13-year-old, I simply wanted to listen under the bed covers in the dark to my favorite radio thriller.
It almost didn’t matter what the program was. Each had the compelling signature music, sometimes just single musical notes, the voices with their sense of urgency, the suspense, the climax, the scripting formula. I also remember the screech of car tires in chase scenes. It was pretty gripping stuff for a small boy.
Remember how shoes were always soled in hard leather? Rubber didn’t make enough noise. Doors always squeaked; silent ones would not have been much use on radio. And do I remember correctly that detectives were always men and that secretaries were always women?
Today, when I recall those days long ago, I remember the crystal radio set with its finicky connection that would fade to almost nothing at the crucial point in the story. Then it would come back just as the announcer was saying something like: “So long! See you next week.”

There Was A Time, When……..
There was a time when “Explode” meant to destroy, not to build.
There was a time when “Guru” meant a religious teacher in India.
There was a time when the “Internet” was the UseNet.
There was a time when “Free Ezine Ads” was productive promotion.
There was a time when “Ezines” were for the most part, informational.
There was a time when “Ram” was a male member of the sheep family.
There was a time when “memory” was all in your mind.
There was a time when “Submit” meant to yield or give in.
There was a time when “Traffic” was something you wished to avoid.
There was a time when “Hits” was usually used as a military term.
There was a time when “Free” really meant Free, no strings attached.
There was a time when “Tons” was a unit of weight measure.
There was a time when “FFA” meant “Future Farmers of America”.
There was a time when “Private Members Club” was Tues. night poker.
There was a time when ” If You had told me I’d be doing this now” I
would’ve told you, that you were a prime candidate for the Looney Bin

Baccarat is one of the easiest casino games to play and is very
popular with high rollers online and big gamblers at online and
land based casinos around the world. It is simple to master your
skills, fun and easy to play.
Comparing to other casino card games Baccarat has clear
advantage for players because of the low house edge, so the odds
to win for players are higher. It is a game of guessing,
therefore no real strategy will work in this game.
In the Baccarat gambling game there are three possible betting
options available- on the player, on the banker and on the tie.
Betting on the player and on the banker both have about the same
house edge percentage, so you have almost a 50% chance of
picking the right outcome and in the event of a tie winning you
get your initial bet back. Your odds are slightly better for
betting on the banker. Sometimes the game offers a commission on
the banker bet (usually 4-5%) which reduce the advantage of this
method. Above all avoid betting on the tie, the the house edge
is the highest for that.
You should not waste your time trying to spot a pattern of the
game and then to chase it pointlessly. There can not be a
pattern in the Baccarat gambling game simply because one hand
has no bearing on the next, and is never influenced by the
preceding hands. Same as trying to guess how the previous slots
spin will affect the next one.
Usually Baccarat gambling game is played with eight decks of
cards. The less number of decks you play with, the higher your
odds for betting on the banker.
Mini-BaccaratBaccarat and mini-Baccarat have the same rules
except they have lower table limits and less players around the
table. Mini-baccarat is good for beginners. Try your luck, hope
for the best and have fun!

This article is written for anybody who reads, publishes or plans to publish and e-zine or newsletter.
Whenever I read about the best ways to promote an online newsletter, listing in e-zine directories is always mentioned as one of those ‘no-brainer’ things that every publisher should automatically do.
So I figured, why not? Everyone else seems to be doing it, I’d better do the same.
Not so easy. In the first place, try looking up ‘ezine directories’ on google. I got 1690 results. A lot of those results turned out not to be a directory, but a list of other directories. The list seemed endless.
In the second place, most of the lists of directories I found turned out to be hopelessly out of date.
So I decided to build my own list of e-zine directories
As I started following the links I hit up against one of the worst aspects of the Internet. Here is a list of the 14 principle reasons why so many of the links turned out to be useless:
1. Site no longer exists 2. Site appears to exist, but content is all pre 1998 3. Site appears to be running, but many links are dead 4. Message says ‘Site no longer maintained.’ 5. Site so badly designed, navigation impossible 6. Site caused my eyes to bleed (figuratively!) 7. Site bombarded me with multiple pop-ups 8. Site not relevant (no e-zine list) 9. Site appeared to be a scam 10. Site redirected to a different URL 11. Payment required to list e-zine 12. Site offered no explanation, name or logo 13. Site no longer accepting submissions 14. Site ‘under construction.’
According to my ‘History’ file, I have visited over 800 sites in the past 3 days. My back hurts, my eyes hurt and my brain has turned to jelly. But I think that I have done it!
All told, I have boiled these 800 ‘possibles’ down to a list of 33 e-zine directory sites that all work, and all accept submissions. That list can be freely accessed on the BizE-zine web site at
http://www.BizE-zine.com/directories1.htm
In order to test them, I have submitted my newsletter details to every one (apart from paml.com which seems to be working, but the link to the submit page doesn’t.) The responses I have had so far are varied:
1. No response
2. A polite email confirming my submission 3. Immediate listing
4. An onscreen notice confirming submission and advising that entry to the list may take some time.
I plan to revisit each of the sites after one month and report back on whether I got listed or not.
Of course, I have no idea whether I will get any new subscribers from all this effort, but I made my entries in such a way as to be able to track the source of any submissions that do arise. I will report on that too in a month.
Six of the sites also accept postings of articles. This could be very useful, but in a few cases, it seemed easier to post than to read those which were already there! Maybe that was just me.
Nine sites also had a good amount of extra content which would be very useful to publishers of e-zines.
These are all indicated on the BizE-zine web site.
Finally, I have ranked the 33 sites in order of their Alexa ranking. This purports to measure the site’s traffic. I am not sure about the legality of quoting the Alexa figures directly, so I have simply put the sites in order - highest traffic at the top.
Is this list definitive? I hope not! I am sure that there must be lots more sites on the Internet that could be included. If you run one, or know of one, please email me at mailto:martin@BizE-zine.com so that I can update the list.
Similarly, if you have had any success with any of the sites I have listed, please let me know - perhaps I can include a ‘users comments’ section on the web page.
My next project is to do the same thing for Article repositories … but not right now - I feel a migraine coming on.
Martin Avis publishes a free weekly newsletter: BizE-Zine - your unfair advantage in Internet marketing, business and personal success. To subscribe, and get 6 great free gifts, please visit http://www.BizE-zine.com

This Sony network Walkman has a storage capability of no less
then 20GB and its battery power is sufficient for more then 40
hours of continuous music. It’s small, certainly compared to its
storage capacity. The walkman has a slim aluminum case that fits
nicely into your hands. It really looks like a cool state of the
art piece of technology
The operation of the Sony NW-HD5 is very intuitive. Still this
walkman comes with a lot op options. The hard-disk of the
walkman is equipped with the so-called “G-Sensor” technology
that protects it to sudden shocks and movements. The clear 1.5
inch dot matrix LCD screen is nicely illuminated at will. So you
see there are plenty of plusses with this device.
But on the minus side there are some, in our opinion
unforgivable, omissions. The equalizer and performance improving
capabilities will only work if you play Sony’s own ATRAC3 files.
You can only add music to the player by using the program
SonicStage that converts WMA files automatically to the Sony
ATRAC3 standard. Using the Windows Explorer to manage your files
is almost impossible. And to top it all off, if you want to be
able to use the NW-HD5 with multiple computers you will have to
register with Sony’s own music service. Otherwise that is off
limits. Finally, the NW-HD5 has no remote control.
Let’s face it the Sony NW-HD5 is a nice piece of technology, but
by adding so many limitations and conditions on its usage this
device loses all of its attraction. Our advice is: “Let Sony
know that we don’t like the limitations they impose on us by
buying another player”.
It just doesn’t make sense that Sony is trying to force
consumers into using their standards and placing a multitude of
limitations on them if they don’t want to comply.

(NC)—As the holiday season arrives, our menus are sure to include tasty treats and yummy desserts, including traditional and new, anything-but-humble pie flavours. Pies are a favourite way to end a meal and they’ve been part of our culture for a long time.
Did you know… the early Romans probably made the first pies, a humble pastry stuffed primarily with meat or other savoury fillings? The first recipe published by the Romans was for a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie. The word “pie” dates back to Middle English of the 14th century when it was also spelled “pye”. During Tudor and Stuart times in England, pies were often made with pears and quince, as well as apples. English tradition credits Queen Elizabeth I with making the first cherry pie, but whether her majesty spent time in the kitchen is arguable. The first mention of a fruit pie in print appeared in 1590 in prose writer Robert Greene’s Arcadia: “Thy breath is like the steame of apple-pyes.”
Quick Home-Baked Pies
There is no doubt that the delectable aroma of a baking pie still works its magic on us. But in our increasingly time-starved lives, it is hard to get around to baking. “Some young women (and men), trained to use the microwave, have never had the opportunity to bake a pie from scratch,” says Chris Glowienka, spokesperson for Sara Lee.
“Our newest addition, called Oven Fresh, is a throwback to a time when life had a more relaxed pace and there was time to slow down, spend a couple of hours in the kitchen and bake a fresh fruit pie for your family and friends. Now we do half of the work and you just pop our pies into the oven. And because you don’t merely heat them through, these thoroughly modern pies let you experience real baking.”
The Oven Fresh pies, he says, include trusted and time-honoured flavours like Apple, Pumpkin, and Dutch Apple with its crunchy streusel topping. For something a little more special, Signature Selections by Sara Lee brings you Fruits of the Forest Deep Dish (made with blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples and rhubarb), Caramel Applenut Deep Dish and classic Southern Pecan.
“Many of our pies are free of preservatives,” says Mr. Glowienka. “We use fruit that is flash frozen right after it’s picked at peak ripeness and never pre-cooked. The fruit simmers in its own juice while the pie is in your oven. Sara Lee pies also have the light, flaky crust homemakers today have come to expect.”
Even if you are pressed for time this holiday season, “bake” your own pie and watch smiles light up your guests’ faces.
And why not take along one of these pies as a welcome additional to any holiday buffet or as a thoughtful hostess gift? It is sure to be appreciated.
