Has Mobile Phone Technology Slowed Down?

It wasn’t that long ago, that your mobile phone was not that mobile. Carrying a brick around comes to mind, with an antenna longer than the normal radio and in any colour you wanted so long as it was black. You also needed to make sure you had a power supply because you were not going to get much talk time before it needed charging up. Not that we could afford to spend much time on the phone, with astronomical charges per minute, providing you were in a good reception area of course

Well how things changed in an amazing short period of time. First the phones got smaller, then they lasted longer between charges, they then took away the extendable aerials. We thought we in the modern age of technology, until one day someone decided to make the mobile phone a fashion accessory too.

Almost overnight, phones changed colour, patterns with removable cases that you could change to suit your outfit or mood. It was no longer only business professionals that wanted a mobile phone, but everyone from your granny to 9-year-old kids.

It wasn’t enough for your phone to look good; it now had to sound good too. So mono ring tones went to polyphonic which then went to MP3 playback. If you are going to look at your screen why look at in black and white? Why not colour? So now the colour screen was born, and with that came wallpapers and photos.

The digital camera had also been advancing, so it wasn’t long before just about every phone would also have an integrated digital camera, to take photos and even video footage to compliment what was now your mobile entertainment centre.

It has been a common trend for mobile phones to become smaller, but different styles have also evolved. You have your standard, facia and keys style, but you also have a clam style (a rounded flip phone) and more recently the slide mobile phone, where you cant see the keys until the facia is slid open. Of course each style represents you as a person as every feature has been added, there is now more choice than ever and in some cases can be overwhelming.

But this year I found a difference when I came to renew my mobile phone contract. I found that my old phone was still one of the main players and in fact more expensive that the previous year. It was true the phone had just been released only one year ago, but it is also true that even other models did not have features beyond my old phone. Yes there were newer models that looked good, but when looking though the list of features, there did not seem to be any advances in technology just a new design.

Of course we will always move on with technology, but has the speed of the development of the mobile phone now slowed down in that we may consider having a phone longer than 12 months now, and not feel out of date if we don’t? This was the first year, where I felt it had. There is technology of integrating TV into your mobile phone, but is it going to be cheap enough and do I really want o watch a minute screen when the trend at home is to have largest TV you can squeeze into your living room. The idea sounds good, but I don’t think it will be as popular as the designers think.
Times are going to be harder for the mobile phone manufacturers, trying to inspire us hard to please, always looking for offers, mobile phone, buying public.

Like televisions, computers, and all other electrical devices, mobile phones emit electromagnetic radiation. The fear was that these devices were being held to close to an individual’s head, and this radiation could cause some form of brain cancer. In a 1999 study, investigators at the Orebro Medical Centre in Sweden compared the past mobile phone use of 209 Swedish brain tumor patients and 425 healthy people. The study found no mobile phone/brain cancer link in virtually all respects, cancer researcher John E. Moulder, Ph.D., says. All the available scientific evidence does not show that any health problems are associated with using wireless phones in adults, children, and teenagers. In spite of this, prudent precautions should be exercised. These include taking measures to move the cell phone antenna at least eight inches away from your head by using hands-free sets, remote earpieces and microphones, or installing radiation shields for hand held phones.

In spite of the unbelievable demand for cell phones, it took cellular phone service 37 years total to become commercially accessible in the US, according to the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association. Today there are more than 60 million customers with cell phones, in spite of the fact that wireless service was just developed nearly 50 years ago. Thieves Want Your Laptop and Your Data

Thieves find laptops easy prey because they are small, light and easy to handle. Anyone who takes their eye off a laptop in public, even briefly, may never see it again.

While special theft protection devices are offered for mobile computers,
experienced thieves often view this as little more than an annoyance. In the end, the loss of the hardware is only part of the problem. It’s when sensitive data resides on the laptop that real problems begin.

Common thieves can be good at instantly taking advantage of a laptop owner’s inattentiveness: The thief strikes while passing by, snapping up laptops in a airport food courts, desks in offices or unlocked automobiles. This includes encrypting data on the hard drive or by only accessing company data via Terminal Services or Citrix remote desktop operating systems,” Cipollone says.

To prevent access to the laptop’s data, users should also create additional Windows and BIOS passwords, Wendt says. Experienced hackers can get around these, however, warns PC expert Cipollone. An alternative for preventing unauthorized access is fingerprint scanners, says Wendt from Computer Service Now.

In the end, a combination of steps is the best, Wendt advises. The latest theft protection devices for laptops are now offered as PC expansion cards, containing a motion sensor and encryption software is a must.

Companies should record the laptop’s serial number so that the police can make a positive identification in case of a theft recovery. Laptop owners can also make recovery of their laptops easier engraving the company name in the plastic case of the laptop.

Speed Up Your Pocket PC Guide

While new Pocket PC owners are usually excited with their purchase,
their enthusiasm is often dampened once they run into stability and
speed issues. This guide will walk you through several tips to keep
your machine slick and well-oiled. As with any system or
registry tweaks, always backup in case something does go amiss.
Remember, we’re not responsible for any loss of data.

1. Disable Windows menu animation

Switching
off eye candies like animation keeps your handheld zippy. To do so,
you’ll need a registry editor like PHM RegEdit to modify the registry.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEMGWEMenu, then change the value
of “AniType” from 6 (default) to 0. This disables the menu animation.

If doing this is a daunting task, an easy alternative is with RegKing. This nifty freeware lets you toggle the menu animation easily and offers other tweaks.

2. Increase display cache

Another
tip to speed up the display is to increase the glyph cache value.
However, this will take up more system memory. Launch your registry
editor and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMGDIGLYPHCACHE. Change
the value of “limit” from 8192 (default) to 16384 or even 32768.

If meddling the registry is unnerving for you, RegKing gets this done in a few taps.

3. Close not minimize

If
you are unaware, when you tap on the close button, the program only
minimizes. Hence, you may end up with a string of programs running on

4. Remove unused programs

uninstall those you don’t require. Go to Start/Settings/System/Remove
Programs to uninstall them.

5. Relocate big files to storage card

Instead
of keeping space-intensive data on your main memory, move these files
to your storage cards instead. A quick way to identify files hogging
the space is via WIMR.
Thereafter, using the built-in File Explorer, just cut and paste to
move files off the main memory. Make sure these are data files rather
than executables or you may break your programs.

6. Install programs onto external storage

If
you need a host of software on your Pocket PC, there’s no way all of
them can be installed on your main memory. Whenever possible, choose to
install programs onto a flash memory card or even non-volatile memory
such as iPAQ File Store. This frees up main memory for running
programs.

7. Remove redundant folders and files

Like
your Windows desktop, the uninstall routine on the Pocket PC often does
a bad job leaving orphaned folders and files. Manually remove them
using File Explorer.

In addition, programs may accumulate redundant data over time. Rather than removing them manually, install SpeedClean, a free tool that deletes Temporary internet files, Cookies and the Temp folder with ease.

8. Clean up the registry

Over time your registry may be choked up with redundant entries. Hunt these down with Remover or Pocket Mechanic.

Want
to save some dough and don’t mind getting your hands dirty? Try
manually removing them from the registry. Launch your registry editor
and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREApps and
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWARE. Delete entries of programs that have been
uninstalled but still lurk in the registry. This won’t do as good a job
by Remover and Pocket Mechanic but should be suffice.

8. Overclocking

If having the fastest Pocket PC means the world to you, try overclocking it. Immiersoft’s XCPUScalar or Pocket Hack Master

designed for. Beware though, there’s a good chance your device may
freeze or even hard-reset.

Ink cartridges are tiny gadgets with mundane features, which are indispensable to the inkjet printers which suck them dry.

They’re also very expensive, which I am sure you can vouch for that based on personal experience.

Two ink cartridges can be more money (as high as $80) than the initial investment which was your pretty little printer.

Buyers do not always do the research they are supposed to do before actually committing to the sale.

They purchase an inkjet printer and find out about 3 months down the road that the cartridges cost more than the actual inkjet printer.

Consumers don’t always have time to be sure whether cartridge producers are giving them their money’s worth.

Resellers are pratically giving the printers away knowing the future cost of your ink carts.

No wonder why printer divorce is so high, the printer and ink costs can’t keep a cheap relationship. The only one’s cheaping are the birds.

We took a look at a few cartridge secrets, such as page yields and the effectiveness of multiple-cartridge schemes, to see if manufacturers are delivering on their ink promises. You need to be aware of this information.

Ink Cartridge Primer:

Inkjet printer technology became affordable for average consumers roughly about 11 years ago. Color printers used only one cartridge, containing colors CMY (cyan, magenta, and yellow) ink, all stored in separate chambers inside the cartridge.

This was sometimes called a tri-color cartridge, as you may know referred to by Hewlett Packard.

To print text, the printer simply squirted all three ink colors simultaneously, which created a composite (and sometimes greenish or brown) black.

Then each dot would be placed on top of each other in order to reduce the picoliters. The smaller the drop size the more clear vibrant colors and detail images you would get.

Modern printers improve upon the one-cartridge design by supplementing the CMY cartridge with an individual black (or K) cartridge.

Not only does this improve the quality of black, but it also helps conserve the more expensive color inks for photos.

The addition of black cartridges also spawned the C (cyan) M (magenta) Y (yellow) K (black) acronym that you see on many inkjet specification sheets and equipped printers with enough color power to create approximately 16.7 million tones.

More recently, a few photo printers began shipping with light cyan and light magenta for improved color transitions; Canon’s S820, for example uses six individual cartridges to deliver all 6 color schemes.

Manufacturers, such as Canon and Epson, are also implementing four-cartridge schemes, in which each tank carries only cyan, yellow, magenta, or black.

The primary reason this system is catching on is that it wastes less ink. With a three-color cartridge, you’re forced to dispose of the cartridge when one color runs out, even if one or two chambers still contain ink. This can increase your cartridge cost.

The four-cartridge setup lets you toss only empty cartridges, so you’ll save ink, but depending on your printing habits, you won’t necessarily save as much money as you like.

If you print one color more often than another color, your ink costs may drop significantly. Average users won’t see a huge cost reduction by switching to a printer that uses four individual cartridges.

Some of them won’t print unless all four cartridges are sitting and locked into position within the carriage itself.

Ink Sensors & Page Yield:

Of course, to get the most from your cartridges you have to determine how much ink you’ve used. By this, just calculate the amount of pages you print within each month.

There are two primary methods printer makers use to accurately display ink levels on your screen. Most companies, such as Epson, use a dot-count method.

The dot-count system works using your printer’s driver, which analyzes each image before printing and keeps a running total of the number of droplets sprayed.

Canon claims to have a superior system that uses both dot counting and an optical sensor.

They contain reservoir inside the sponge in the ink tank, [and] the reservoir has an optical ink sensor in it, very impressive.

A light inside the printer shines in the reservoir and the sensor helps determine ink levels.

If the reservoir is empty, the printer estimates that there’s about 20% ink remaining in the sponge below the reservoir, and your PC begins using the dot-count method.

Because cartridge cases are typically opaque, some sort of ink monitoring system is a necessity. But how can you determine if the cartridge will yield as many pages as the manufacturer claims?

Most manufacturers assign yield ratings to black cartridges after draining the tank by continuously printing a 1,500-character document at the default resolution setting.

I decided to test a few cartridges with our own test, which we felt more accurately mimicked real-world use. To maximize your ink yields you need to drop each printer to its lowest resolution.

I also wanted a document that covered the entire page, so my “extreme inkjet test” document contained nearly 3,500 characters.

I loaded our Lexmark Z65 with a new $30.00 black cartridge, company-rated at 600 pages. Our test document printed nearly 694 times before text began to fade, resulting in a cost of about 4 cents per page.

I also subjected the black cartridge in Canon’s S820D to our test. The $13.00 black cartridge has a manufacturer rating of 620 pages. Our test yielded 565 pages of text, approximately 2 cents per page.

You will get your money’s worth from original manufacturer cartridges. Still, it can be painful to spend $30.00 on a new cartridge when you see ads for cartridge refill kits promising to save you loads of cash.

Refill Kit Caper:

We tested a number of refill kits to see if they’ll save money and to compare their output with the results of manufacturers’ inks. For our tests, we gauged ease of use in preparing and refilling two black cartridges and then subjected those tanks to the Extreme Inkjet Test. Further tests took place on the yield potential and color quality of one color refill system.

Each kit works in basically the same way. You apply rubber gloves and pry, slice, or screw your way into the empty cartridge. Make sure you have a good top cutter. You don’t want to crack the plastic.

Then you carefully open a bottle of ink and use a syringe to withdraw a few milliliters of ink. After injecting the ink into the cartridge, you seal it up using the provided tape or rubber stopper. Sounds easy, right? Easier said than done.

Actually, I found it nearly impossible to avoid spilling ink. Be careful not to get ink on your clothes, it can soak your skin, and when covered properly, ink slopped on the table.

After all this, the cartridge produced about 25 full-page photos, which was OK, considering the huge bottles of ink should last for about nine more refills (about 25 cents per photo).

Photos looked remarkably good on both plain and photo paper, but they were grainy compared to photos printed with Epson ink. Worse yet, shortly after printing a few photos we attempted to print black text, and after a few pages, the tank stopped working and ink spewed all over the printer.

The chip resetting software may have caused the malfunction.

In spite of the uncertain cost savings and poor photo quality, refill kits are hot items, flourishing in spite of printer manufacturers’ efforts to convince customers that third-party inks are superinferior.

In spite of advances made by third-party ink makers, printer manufacturers refuse to back down from their claims that such inks simply don’t work correctly with advanced print head technology.

Refill Rebuttal:

Canon, Hewlett-Packard, and Lexmark all use thermal print head technology. Epson uses patented Piezo-electric print heads. The technologies employ slightly different ink cartridges and dissimilar ink formulations to work with the print heads.

In thermal inkjets, a tiny resistor in the print head warms the ink, causing a bubble that forces a droplet out of the print head nozzle.

Epson’s Piezo-electric technology doesn’t heat ink. Instead, a tiny crystal in the print head works like a pump; when a negative charge is applied to the crystal it bends out from the ink chamber and draws in a droplet, while a subsequent positive charge flexes the crystal in, pushing the droplet through the nozzle.

Both technologies have exacting specifications for the inks they shoot.

Inks used in thermal printers are typically dye-based and must be formulated to retain good print qualities under heat stress.

Epson’s ink developers, however, are free to dismiss heat factors and instead create smaller and more consistently shaped droplets. Pairing inks properly with tiny print heads and nozzles is no simple feat.

Ink chemistry is “very complex stuff” in part because the various characteristics of inks affect the way droplets interact with each other on paper. Because every manufacturer’s papers and inks are so different and multifaceted, there’s just no way can a third-party lab reproduce the original ink quality.

Although refill kits may produce prints that initially look nice, it’s doubtful they have the same fade-resistant or water-resistant properties of original printer inks.

Manufacturers also stress that while using a refilled cartridge doesn’t affect your printer’s warranty, if your printer malfunctions due to a refilled or modified cartridge, the warranty is voided.

Whether you trust printer makers or their refill-kit competition, our opinion of refill kits is that they’re a bit of a hassle to use.

If you print a lot of text, they may save you money. However, we wouldn’t pair third-party inks with expensive photo paper, especially if you want your prints to last for years.
