Common Knowledge just might be hindering you from improving your swing, causing you major frustration and higher scores.
There is a lot of well meaning golf instruction in the market place today that simply will not help your game; in fact a lot of what’s out there will hinder you as you try to improve your golf.
Controversial? Probably, but I think the positives of letting people know the truth about some of the mis-information out there will far outweigh any industry fall-out that I might receive from those instructors with stepped-on toes.
When David Leadbetter or any other of a host of golf instruction gurus tells his touring professional student to “delay the rotation of the left hip”, or to “increase the width of your swing at the top”, “or to “delay the release as long as possible”, or any other “flavor of the day” type golf tips, he or she is talking with someone who is a professional, who practices hours on end, and who has an unbelievably acute feel for their own golf swing. This person also plays golf for a living. This is a completely different scenario than trying to teach a low, mid, or high handicap player or a beginner. These types of tips can absolutely wreak havoc on your golf swing.
Golf is a difficult game to play at the highest levels, but, having said that, it is not a complicated game to play. Most modern day instruction is hard for me to understand and I’ve been teaching the game for 20 years. In order to excel, you have to free your mind of complicated mechanical thoughts and learn to simply swing the golf club. Until you change the way you think about playing the game, change the fundamental way you look at golf instruction, and realize that you have to forget mechanics, you’ll never play up to your full potential as a golfer.
“Forget mechanics”, you ask, “why that’s all I think about.” I can hear your mind racing now; “Start the club back online, turn don’t sway, pull down with the left hand to start the down swing, transfer my weight to my left foot, roll my wrists at impact, head behind the ball.” YIKES! How can you even take the club back with all these mechanical thoughts you’ve picked up over the years racing through your head?”
The answer to my question is ….you can’t! You simply cannot swing the club effectively with all that garbage running through your mind, distracting you from what’s most important.
It’s sad, but absolutely true that thousands of people quit the game we all love every year, most out of sheer frustration.
If you have fallen into this trap of believing that mechanical tips, swing analysis, and pounding golf ball after golf ball on the driving range are the answers to your problems, you are destined to be frustrated forever. Golf should be fun not frustrating and when you learn to forget mechanics and start playing the game via feel and sight, it will be fun and you’ll shoot better scores. I guarantee it!
“How do I do that”, you ask?
First you have to be able to differentiate fact from fiction when reading, listening to. or watching golf instruction.
Next, you have to forget all the theories, mechanical thoughts, and myths and focus on what is important to your game.
That’s right, I said your game, not Tiger’s, not Phil’s, not Big John’s but yours. Focus on the things that are important for you to play better. Focus on your swing path and the moment of truth..Impact. Tie swing path and impact into your target-line and you’re well on your way to longer, straighter shots, and lower scores.

The Grand Prix of Europe, the fifth race of the 2006 campaign, takes place at Nrburgring which opened in 1984. It has hosted 13 F1 world championship events under three different names: the GP of Europe (1984, 1995-1996, 1999-2005), the German GP (1985) and the Luxembourg GP (1997-1998).
This Grand Prix track has the fame of having such an unpredictable weather it adds a special element to the anxiety of the race. This is the 16th season for the Grand Prix of Europe. Before, it had been hosted in Spain (Jerez) and England (Brands Hatch and Donington Park).
For the F1 competitors the biggest challenge has been selecting tire compounds for this track because of the variability of the weather. This might be more of a factor than ever because the race is taking place three weeks earlier than it did last season so the weather turns even more unpredictable. As a result, the F1 tires require a fairly broad operating spectrum, in other words they have to be fast and consistent even if the weather forecasts are 100 per cent inaccurate, as they were at Imola.
On the evidence of previous seasons, conditions could border on freezing yet could just as easily nudge 30C. As for the possibility of rain, that holds no worries, the lap times recorded during free practice for the Australian Grand Prix indicated just how much progress F1 has been making in the subject of tiring.

Whether you grew up on a swim team or came to lap swimming later in life, you know what great exercise the sport is. Swimming can not only provide a cardiovascular workout, but it tones muscles as well. And, of course, it burns calories. That means you can eat more goodies, er, lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The bad part about swimming is it can be a pain going to the local pool. Lap swimming hours vary from facility to facility, wedged in between open swim and lessons, which means you can only go at certain times of the day. A swim workout can be hard to fit into your schedule as often as you would like. And when you can make it to the public lap swim, sometimes the lanes are crowded, or there are kids there goofing around instead of swimming. Add to that the commute time that is wasted traveling to and from the pool, and you can see why more and more people are equipping their homes so they can swim laps from their own back yards.
What are your options if you want to go that route? Obviously, you won’t get a good workout paddling back and forth in your bath tub. The two main options are lap pools and swim spas.
Lap Pools
The only difference between a lap pool and other residential swimming pools is the shape and size. Instead of the ubiquitous kidney-shaped pool, these pools are long, narrow rectangles that emulate a single lap lane. If there’s room, homeowners will go for the full 25 yard length found at most local pools. That way it’s easy to calculate how far you’ve swum. Generally, only 3.5-4 feet deep, lap pools are for serious swimmers and aren’t usually used for recreational swimming (they lack the depth and width needed for toys like diving boards and slides), but they are enough to take a dip in and cool off on a hot day.
The cost for installing a lap pool will vary from region to region, but installation and labor starts at about $20,000-$30,000.
Swim Spas
Swim spas are a newer alternative to digging up the backyard to install a lap pool. Much like a hot tub, they are self-contained units that can be installed indoors or out. They work like a treadmill, where you basically swim in place with an adjustable current pushing against you. Because of this, they take up much less space than a traditional lap pool.
Swim spas aren’t necessarily cheaper to install than regular swimming pools though. They start at about $20,000 and that doesn’t include installation or building a deck/sinking them into the ground (whichever you prefer). Also, because they are still relatively rare, it can be hard to find a local pool company with experience installing and servicing them.
Still, either lap pools or swim spas are viable options if you are looking to give up your pass at the local pool and start swimming for exercise at home.
TC Thorn writes numerous hot tub articles, which you can find at http://home.comcast.net/~hot_tub/hot-tub-articles.htm or you can find out more about swim spas at http://home.comcast.net/~hot_tub/swim-spa.htm . This article may be reprinted online or in print as long as these links are included.

If you are determined to attempt your first ironman, but a bit nervous about the swim, this may make you feel better.
Historically, more first time Ironman starters are more experienced in the run and/or the bike as opposed to the swim. You are not alone!
Trust me, I survived my first Ironman swim and so will you. When I watched those crazy people back in 1982 and they were swimming 2.4 miles in the ocean, my first thought was—”well I guess that rules me out”. Considering I couldn’t swim a stroke at the time and had a healthy fear of the water, my chances looked pretty slim.
Something happened though. The more I watched the race, the more I wanted to do it. By the time the T.V. version of Hawaii Ironman 1982 was done, I was determined to learn how to swim. I wanted to cross that finish line.
Two years later I was in Kona, the cannon went off, and I was on my way. THIS WAS MY FIRST OPEN WATER SWIM! And what a swim it was! I had a really crappy stoke. I know that now. I didn’t care at the time. I was swimming in Kona–in the Ironman!
I got hit and kicked and run over, but luckily for me there were only around 900 starters that day. It would get much worse in coming years as fields have grown to 2000 plus!
Back to Kona! It was surreal. Swimming out to the boat with the big orange sails that marked the turn. Watching tropical fish as I swam. Scuba divers sitting on the ocean floor waving as we swam by. Making the turn at half-way and an under-water photographer taking my picture as I rounded the boat and headed back. The amazing rush as I felt the current lift me and push me towards shore.
I can’t even put into words what it felt like when I stood up after one hour and 38 minutes and realized I had finished the Hawaii Ironman swim. It was a defining moment in my life. I knew right then that before the day was done, I would be an Ironman.
I will never forget that transition tent. It was electric! It was like everyone was talking at once. You could “feel” the sense of accomplishment and relief in the air. Thinking back, I truly believe a lot of people in the race that year were dreading the swim.
I told you this story for a reason. It sure isn’t to brag. It’s to inspire you. It’s to make you realize that if you want this bad enough, its there for the taking. POWER! WISDOM! STRENGTH! You have that inside you. Now–let it out. Get in the water!
Don’t make the same mistakes I did though. I pretty well did everything wrong when I tried to make myself a faster swimmer.
I read books. I swam thousands of lengths, Reinforcing all my bad habits. I swam miles and miles with pull buoys, because my feet sank. I blasted my way through the water. It took me 10 years to take 15 minutes off my original Hawaii swim. The gun would go off and I would move my arms as fast I could for 2.4 miles.
It took years, but I soon discovered that I had to SLOW DOWN in order to swim faster. I learned that swimming relaxed and using the natural buoyancy that we all have was the answer. It wasn’t really how FAST I got to the other end of the pool, it was HOW! I finally learned that 16 relaxed strokes every 25 meters is a ton better then 25 “move your arms as fast as you can strokes.”
Learn to press the upper half or your body(your chest)into the water as you swim. Your lungs will act as a natural buoy and when you master the technique you will feel your legs rise to the surface behind you. Its simple physics and you will see a difference in one training day. “Press your buoy” every time you swim and soon it will become natural. Also count your strokes and reduce the number of strokes it takes to reach the end of the pool. When you get the smooth gliding stroke down and understand the buoyancy, slowly begin to add speed. Soon your swimming will improve by leaps and bounds.
I worked on that for the whole training season and found myself back at the Ironman swim start. I stayed calm and relaxed. I used my new loooooong, smoooooth, stroke. Kept nice even balance on top of the water, and was very relaxed when I finished the swim. I thought, “well, I don’t feel like I worked very hard or swam very fast, but if my time’s slower that’s ok, at least I feel great!
MY TIME WAS A PERSONAL BEST SWIM BY JUST OVER FIVE MINUTES! In one training season, by learning to relax, and swim with proper technique and use loooong, smooooth strokes and proper body balance I made a huge improvement in my swimming.
Remember: Its not how many miles you swim in training—its how you swim. That’s the key.
A few other things..
If you don’t manage to swim in the open water during your training, don’t worry about it. Save it for race day like I did. The right swim technique will work anywhere. You should however, do some swimming in your wetsuit even if its just in the pool. Just to get used to how it feels.
I highly recommend you do away with all those swimming aids. Kick boards and pull buoys shouldn’t really be part of your ironman swim training. There’s no need to learn how to be a great kicker. Swim with proper technique and kicking is not a big issue and you can save your legs for later in the day. If you learn proper balance in the water, your legs won’t sink and you won’t need to use pull buoys.
Don’t feel you ‘have’ to join a swim club to improve your swimming. If you enjoy the club atmosphere, by all means, go for it. I always found I did better on my own.
Just remember this: The Ironman is an individual event. Much of it is done in solitude as you fight your own demons. Even if you have company in the marathon–they cannot carry you. It is what is inside you that will determine how your day ends.
I experienced the Ironman swim 14 times. It wasn’t until about the last 5 races that I truly learned how to approach the swim. Hopefully my swim suggestions can save you a lot of trial and error.

As we go through life it is amazing how many people you meet that never learned how to swim. If these parents ever accompany their children to swimming pools or lakes, they do not have the skills to save their own child. Teaching children to swim should be mandatory, and is, if you own a pool.
Studies have shown that children who started swimming lessons at ages 2-4 actually learned to swim well at an average age of 5-1/2 years. Should you wait until kindergarten age to start swimming lessons? Absolutely not. While younger children may not swim well, they can be taught how to get to the edge of the pool. These precious seconds may well save their life.
Survival swimming is now being taught to children as young as six months. One statistic shows that 86% of children that drown do so while fully clothed. Survival swimming is taught to children who are fully clothed. Infant Swimming Resource is a website dedicated to reducing the number of accidental drownings. The author does not have any ties to the company or website, but would encourage the reader to visit this fine resource.
If we haven’t scared you enough about child drownings, think about this:
- Among children ages 1 to 4 years, most drownings occur in residential swimming pools (Brenner et al. 2001). Most young children who drowned in pools were last seen in the home, had been out of sight less than five minutes, and were in the care of one or both parents at the time (Present 1987).
- For every child who drowns, three receive emergency department care for non-fatal submersion injuries. More than 40% of these children require hospitalization (CDC 2003). Nonfatal incidents can cause brain damage that result in long-term disabilities ranging from memory problems and learning disabilities to the permanent loss of basic functioning (i.e. permanent vegetative state).
Do figures like these shake you up; make you sick to your stomach thinking “what if” about your own children? Then do something about it. Find out about infant swim programs. Find out about learn to swim programs for older children. And if you never learned how to swim, join a program yourself.
Learning how to swim is not the only requirement for swimming pool safety, just a very important one. Proper supervision and having fencing installed around the pool are also needed. Having a phone with you so you don’t have to leave the pool is another good idea. Other safety considerations can be found at the article resource page of Pool-Pockets

Quality motorcycle gear combines comfort, style, fit,
durability, weather protection, and armor. The bottom line with
equipment is, you WILL eventually fall, and when you do, you
will most likely become very close friends with the pavement. So
you need the “maximum impact and abrasion resistance” as
possible.
Armor is extra padding sewn into the jacket or pants to cushion
likely spots of impact. Road rash is the not so fun part about
riding a motorcycle. It is painful and
bloody, but impacts can cause serious and sometimes fatal
internal damage. So shoulders, elbows, buttocks, and knees are
spots that you want to be well protected, as they are the most
common of impact points. In any serious crash it isn’t hard to
get a bruise on all of these body locations. Other common
regions of impact are the chest, back, and collar bone. So as
you can see armor placement is crucial.
Material used for armor is another major concern. They are
usually composites of plastic and foam. Simple plastic plates
would slash through the material and expose you to injury, so
they put hard plastic plates inside a thick layer of firm foam.
Some garments also have built in spine protectors. If not,
however, and you feel that you are not properly protected,
jacket liners with armor pads are available for purchase, which
are called “body guard jackets”.
For the most part, jackets off the rack consist of small,
medium, large, and extra large. But there is more to a well
fitting jacket than that. Your protection depends on how well
your equipment fits. If you luck out and find a jacket that you
like and fits well off the rack, you’re in business. But if you
don’t you can order custom made leathers. There is 5 companies
worldwide that can do your custom fit; Langlitz, Bates, Z Custom
Leather, Vanson, and Aerostitch. But don’t expect to order up
your jacket and have it in a week. Each company can only produce
about 1600 custom jackets per year, so there is a waiting list
as long as the dictionary. So make sure you place your order
well before you need to ride, or you could be hooped.

I’ve had backpacking trips that included rain, snow, lightning, rockslides, altitude sickness, and twenty-mile days - all in a summer weekend. Wilderness trips can be dangerous, but you can make then less so, by having the following ten essentials in your backpack.
1. Knowledge. What good is a compass if you don’t know how to use it? Play with matches if your fire-making skills are shaky. Learn what to do when you see a bear. Read a little, practice a little - knowledge is more likely to save you than gadgets.
2. Map and compass. These are together, because that’s the way you need to use them.
3. Matches and lighter. Bring both, or waterproof matches and a fire starter of some sort. Having two ways to start a fire is much safer.
4. First aid kit. Buy a pre-packaged one or build your own. Make sure it has pain relievers, bandages, disinfectant, and notes on basic first aid procedures.
5. Foot care. Your first aid kit needs moleskin, and maybe a pin, to treat blisters. Your feet have to be well cared for when you’re hiking miles from the nearest road.
6. Water purification. A filter works, but they clog and break so often that you should have a small bottle of iodine tablets or other water purification as back up.
7. Rainwear. One of the biggest killers in the woods is hypothermia, and it often starts when you get wet. Try to stay dry.
8. Shelter. This can be a tent, tarp or bivy sack. Just be sure you know how to use it.
9. Sleeping bag. Down bags are the warmest for their weight, but be sure you know how to keep it dry, or bring a synthetic bag.
10. Specific trip items. For backpacking trips in Michigan in May, bring insect repellant. In June in Arizona, bring sunblock. Think about the specific conditions for the time and place of your trip.
Make your own list if you take regular backpacking trips. It’s no fun when a friend tells us ten miles down the trail that he’s allergic to bees and forgot his medicine. A little planning means less worries, and a better trip.

Food addiction isn’t the problem.
Pretending like you can’t live without eating however, IS the problem. If you’re stranded on a desert island without food, what would you do? Your body can survive well over 24 hours without food if you’re drinking water.
How about if someone offered you 50 million dollars to not eat? How addicted would you be then?
Personally, I’ll be upfront and tell you that I think that it’s utter nonsense to believe that food is addictive. Food is fuel for the body and that’s it. There is no such thing as an “addiction fairy” sprinking his magic dust on a Big Mac so you’re forced to eat it.
In today’s society, doctors have made it easier for people to indulge in self-destructive behaviors by saying they are “addicted” to it.
Personally, I think the people who diagnose these addictions are addicted to “ease of ignorance and influence”. Saying that you’re addicted to lots of food is like Osama Bin Ladin saying he’s addicted to spelunking.
When it comes to eating too much and you feel that you’re gaining weight, remember this:
IT’S ONLY FOOD!!
That’s right! It’s not a ticking time bomb that’s going to self destruct in 5 seconds if you don’t eat it. Anyone in their right mind can easily realize that an inanimate object like an cheeseburger or a snickers bar has no control over you. However, if you do feel it does, then I’m addicted to your brand-new car.
If you know you should be eating better, then simply do it. If you know you shouldn’t be eating a certain type of food, then don’t do it!
All the great tastes and wonderful flavors have been created to entice your taste buds and the food’s emotional appeal. Natural foods don’t need to be “processed”. They provide a filling sensation and a healthy solution on their own.
Oh, and if you’re wondering what’s in the delicious foods you enjoy eating so much, look at the ingredients. If you can pronounce the majority of the ingredients, call me. I’d like to know what they are.
If you’ll notice, most of the foods eaten are the results of hundreds of chemical combinations (some of which aren’t safe for you) which give it that taste that you’re “addicted” to.
It’s only food. Our forefathers who build this great country weren’t addicted to food. But I’m sure you wouldn’t be either if you had to chase your meal, shoot it, skin it, wash it, clean the insides and outsides of it, pluck all the feathers or fur off and so on!
Believe me, if I went through that, I would truly enjoy my meal. I’m sure they weren’t addicted because they were too tired from chasing it!
But if you’re picking up your meal and it’s not clucking, mooing, kicking trying to escape, biting for its life, or growing because of photosynthesis, then it’s not putting up a struggle.
You make the decision to put it in your mouth, chew it, and swallow it. And you can make the decision to put it down anytime you desire.
It’s your choice. It’s fuel for your body. That’s it. It’s not addictive, tasty, wonderful, mouth-watering and all that jazz.
Remember, you have the control. You only have to take action and prove it.

Juninho put 1/4 Brazil in front after 52 minutes, Gilberto netted a third on 58 and Ronaldo scored his second with 10 minutes left.
Australia were unlikely qualifiers after the earned the draw they needed against Croatia. Darijo Srna fired in a free kick to give Croatia a second minute lead but Craig Moore levelled from the penalty spot on 38. Group H
1. Spain 9pts, 2. Ukraine 6pts, 3. Tunisia 1pt, 4. Saudi Arabia 1pt
An under strength Spain beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 to ensure three wins out of three during the group stage. Real Betis defender Juanito netted the winner 10 minutes before the break for the 1/4 Spaniards.
