How to Get Customers for Free

There’s no shortage of ways to spend money promoting your online shop - and certainly no shortage of people willing to take your money! However, search engines can be sending you qualified customers all day every day. How do you get a piece of this traffic? It’s estimated that 70% of people stop at the first 10 results in most search engines and over 90% don’t go beyond the first 30. If your shop isn’t in the top of the search results, you’re missing out. We’ll go through the five steps to getting you higher in the search engine rankings.

Choose the right keywords
You need to decide which search term(s) you want to be top for. This might not be as obvious as you think. Firstly, you need to know what people are (and aren’t) searching for. Being the number 1 result for a search term no one uses is no
good. The Overture keyword selector tool can show you what people are searching for. Take some guesses as to what people are
looking for, try them out and see what the tool says - you might be surprised! Do a
Google search for a possible keyword. If, for example, you see 5,000,000 results returned you have to consider: can you beat 4,999,990 of them? You might be better off getting a number 1 position for a lesser keyword than a number 200 for a big one.
Be careful not to be too ambitious - that keyword with the most traffic might be
highly competitive in the search engines. If you are competing against a
multi-million dollar online shop you’re unlikely to win.

Make sure your site is search engine friendly
The goal here is to make sure the search engines like your shopping cart site. You might need some help from your techies with this.

  • Create a sitemap pointing to all your pages, or all your key pages. This helps the search engines find all your pages.
  • Include your keywords in your HTML title tags in all your key shopping cart pages.
  • Include your keywords in a h1 tag.
  • If your shopping cart or CMS uses session IDs in the URL, turn this off, or change to a different tool. You can usually tell if you have this turned on if you URL looks like http://www.widgets.com/products/page.php?product=2329&session=29dha9198yfka8129fnv0. The big long session number is the dangerous part.
  • Make your HTML code clean & validated - most search engines prefer this.
  • Make sure your keywords are included in the copy on your site.

Some shopping carts such as Erol or osCommerce (with an add on module) provide excellent search engine optimization tools.

Get links
It’s no secret - most search engines love sites that have lots of links pointing at them. Get your customers & suppliers to link to you. This is the single most important thing you can do. There are companies that specialize in
helping you get links - look them up if it’s important to you.

Watch your traffic
If your web host provides you with web statistics, then check them closely. Probably the most popular web statistics software is AWStats. This provides information on what people are searching for when they arrive at your site. This data is gold. Find out what people are looking for, and make sure that they can get it - easily!

Content, content and more content
Search engines love content - the more content the better. Detailed product descriptions, articles relevant to your product line, whatever, the search engines love it. So start writing, it’s not as hard as it looks!

Lastly, be patient. Search engines operate in their own time and results can
take months to show. If this is an important area for you, consider enlisting a
professional which can save you a lot of time. However, there is a lot of
helpful resources and if you want to do the work yourself, roll up your sleeves,
work hard and watch the customers pour in every day.

Reciprocal Links: Quality is as Important as Quantity

Link popularity, the number of incoming links to your website, plays an important part in determining your site’s ranking in a search engine. But, before you rush off to try and get any and all sites to link to you there are a few things to consider, and one of them is that the quality of the links are as important as the quantity.

If you get a link to your site from Yahoo, then your own site’s ranking in various search engines will be enhanced, as Yahoo is one of the most popular sites on the Internet. Ranking of course is not a precise term, and varies from search engine to search engine. But if you want to be consistent, you can use the Google Toolbar, and the Google page ranking, shown in the toolbar, as way of judging how well you are doing. Google ranks a page from 0-10, and a site with a 0 ranking will not do well in searches, especially in very competitive categories. So when it comes to finding link partners one guideline is to find sites that have a Google ranking that is equal to or higher than yours.

A site with a 0 ranking will not help you. Also, sometimes a site has a relatively good page ranking but its links page is 0, and this is the page that links to you, thus it is very important. So the question is why is the links page 0 when the rest of the site is OK? Some sites use robotic tools to create what are known as “link farms. Link farms are huge collections of links, a giant directory that dwarfs the original web site. These were set up by people hoping to increase their link popularity very fast. However search engines got wise to this, and do not give any importance to such directories, hence you will see a 0 ranking for them.

So, if it is a link farm, don’t participate in a link exchange with that site. It will not help you, and some observers say that a link from a “link farm” will actually harm your standing. I am not sure if it will harm you, but it is definitely not going to help you.

Another important thing to consider is whether the links page or directory on the other site is visible to the public. This might seem elementary, but some people like to get reciprocal links but don’t really display them fairly, because they don’t want people leaving their site through the reciprocal links. The links page should be linked to at least one of the major pages of the site, if it is not, then don’t puruse the link. One time, I noticed this on another site and objected. The webmaster acknowledged my point and changed the site to properly display the links page.

Similarly, if your link on the other site will be in sea of hundreds of unsorted links, like on the free-for-all links pages, this is not valuable to you, because such a site has little chance of sending you any traffic.

What are the best sites to link to? A site that has good content, a site that your web visitors will think is a valuable resource. While you can’t take responsibility for everything that is on the other person’s website, you shouldn’t knowingly send your web visitors to a low-quality website. So be selective in pursuing reciprocal links, and in responding to requests for links. Visit the other site and see what it is all about before jumping to link with them.

The ideal link partner should be a site thematically related to yours, with the kind of visitors who will also be interested in your site. It should give your link the kind of prominence that will enable you to get some traffic, and finally, the site should have a decent page ranking. If you get all of these factors together, you can be sure that it is a quality link and worth your effort in making the contact and setting up the link exchange. Check your logs from time to time and see which links are performing well, and then try to find similar link partners.

Reciprocal linking takes time if you want to do it correctly, but the targeted traffic that it can generate coupled with the enhancement of your page ranking that it can provide, makes it an important part of overall website promotion.

Traffic Generation Tutorials - Article 1 of 10 Bi Weekly Articles

This article will be continually updated with your feedback and updates will appear http://www.its-brilliant.com/0001.html. Please See Contact and Reprint details at end of Article

An “In Depth” Look At How To Create an email discussion list If you find this information valuable, please send it on to a friend

This Article is #1 of 10 articles dealing with successful TRAF- FIC GENERATION CREATION METHODS to build a large subscriber base for your site or email discussion list, and while you may think you’ve seen this title before, it’s highly doubtful that you’ve seen the subject matter treated in such an IN DEPTH Manner

Most other sites when dealing with TRAFFIC GENERATION CREATION METHODS, and I include the “Internet Guru” sites in this, will tell you, “Create an email discussion list. The list should be related to your web site’s subject. Place your ad on all posts and it will remind people to visit your site.” and that will be all you get. You have to figure out the “how” yourself. The instructions you received were almost an exact copy of what I have in my comments

Here, you will not have to figure it all out

OK. Let’s get on with it. Just what is an email discussion list? Adam Boettiger of www.email911.com says “Email discussion lists are the most powerful, educational online resources that you will ever encounter. They can provide you with immediate, free access to the collective knowledge, wisdom and experience of thousands of people”.

So? What is an email discussion list in reality? He, Adam Boettiger, goes on to say “Discussion lists are Knowledge Exchanges”.

OK I’ll go along with that, but how do you create a successful Email Discussion List, group or what ever?

To start, you need to look at TWO factors. They are 1) Strategies and 2) Tactics.

A STRATEGY is your “business plan” to achieve what you want from your goals, and TACTICS are “things” you employ to keep your strategy on track and in the “fast lane”

Here’s How to create a marketing strategy that’s better than your competition’s in five simple steps This is the basic concept as used by Proctor & Gamble. I’m sure you’ve heard of them and it looks deceptively simple

  1. Compile an exhaustive list of the facts about your proposed group.

  2. Extract your pertinent facts from your exhaustive list of facts.

  3. What possibly Profitable Opportunities are presented in the extracted facts?

  4. Create a Short-term strategy from the extracted facts.

  5. Create a Long-term strategy from your exhaustive list of the facts.

That’s it! It really is it! It’s ALL you need to start with, as the guts of the project you have in mind will naturally follow on if you first follow these 5 steps.

Now let’s look at it in more detail.

The first stage is all about research. You want to find out everything you can about your email discussion product and potential market. Start out on the ‘net with a search tool such as webferret and feed your web ferret keywords and key phrases on the subject of your interest, look up figures, resource information, study guides, credible - NOT Incredible - reports, and have a completely open mind while you keep looking for any thing else that could possibly be of interest, and which will help you more concisely determine your short and long term goals .

Next, get out and communicate with existing and potential clients and sound them out on your concept. This means getting craftily involved and participating in sereral other email discussion groups which are similiar in content to what you’re thinking about.

Get as much information as you possibly can. While you are doing this, take notes on the things you find out. Don’t be tempted to stop too soon. More formal research tools like surveys can be used later if you have the money and time.

Stage two is about going over your information and extracting those facts that are most pertinent. I usually find there are just a few which are of immediate and key importance.

Here’s what you’re looking for.

What are the really key issues that you can base your marketing strategy on?

Is there some special piece of legislation coming up that is particularly relevant?

Is there a niche that no one else is exploiting? (If there is GRAB IT!!!)

Is there something unique about your email discussion product that customers will want more from you that from your competition? Or better still, is there some “modification” you can make to make it that way? Remember, there’s nothing new under the sun!

When you have your pertinent facts you need to list all the possibly profit making opportunities you have. This is the creative part. Marketing planning is all about thinking about your potential markets and how to reach them and sell to them. So think about each of your possibly potential markets and how you can contact them. Possibly, you will isolate them into various groups such as Group #1 consists of a small number of highly profitable customers and Group #2 large number of low value customers.

Think about which markets are most profitable for the least effort.

You also need to consider how to reach them - some markets, for example top business people, can be very hard to reach via an email discussion list so what alternatives can you apply and how quickly you can start to communicate with them.

Rank your possibly profitable opportunities by RETURN Potential profitability.

Now take the top five possibly profitable opportunities and put them into your short-term strategy, the next two-three years. From these you will create your TACTICS to help you define and Identify your target market and your Marketing Tactics,

Your long-term strategy is what you have left over from your exhaustive list of the facts.

Also, remember that while you are implementing your strategy your market will be changing, make sure you set up information flow channels that keep you in touch with the market. Is a large competitor suddenly going all out for a niche market you had set your heart on? If so, keep researching as you’re bound to find a “wrinkle” he hasn’t covered or hasn’t even thought of..

Why I like this particular system…. IT WORKS!

This strategic marketing system is as used by Proctor and Gamble one of the world’s largest companies. It’s worked for them. And I like it best because it’s simple and can be applied to any size of business of project, and it works for ME. So, it should work for YOU! .

Also REMEMBER THAT when it comes to marketing tactics planning everyone naturally wants to dive in at the creative stage (step three). Hence most people ask themselves the question, “how can we sell this product?” and then set about brainstorming a few ideas with colleagues, family and friends.

This is normal, and you may be surprised to learn that it’s also what a lot of very large companies do too. The problem is that you end up avoiding the whole raft of ideas you get when you research properly. The other thing is fact most of your compet- itors also will not be researching - they’ll be doing it on the fly, which gives you a big competitive advantage, and you will have a powerful and effective success technique.

Announcing Your List. Announce your new list, once completed by

  1. Posting the information to appropriate announcement lists and sites.

  2. Listing the site with every search engine possible.

  3. Getting involved into communication that is of interest to both parties, via email, with every related subject or non-compet itive site you can find, then announcing your site to those.

Sending announcements via email to those people who are potential subscribers by joining appropriate opt-in lists such as http//NEW-LIST.com/ Make extensive use of your web ferret from http//www.ferretsoft.com/ using search terms such as email discussion lists, tips, ezines, newsletters, marketing e-zines, list owners, paying sponsors, sponsorships, mailing lists, promotions, nettiquette, subscriptions, increasing subscribers, majordomo, listserv etc. Sending announcements via email to websites of people in new target markets but be sure to avoid spamming.

Create your email discussion list around the profiles of people found in your research. Your list should be open to discussion on all topics related to your list’s proposed products, or ser- vices. For some technical lists, you may need to narrow the focus to specific subjects within a given industry. It may be beneficial to operate two or three narrowly focused lists in- stead of one broad list.

Always include a brief “signature” in your emails giving your name and title, address and phone, email address, and URL (Uniform Resource Locator or website address) on each piece mailed. An appropriate, brief, and effective, slogan should be used as well. Some mailing list servers (programs) allow auto- matic posting of the listowner’s signature at the bottom of each letter received, before it is sent out to list members

Many other techniques can be used. For example, some sites offer prizes or other incentives to visitors who will register. Others use carefully placed banner ads on related commercial sites to draw new prospects. You are limited only by netiquette, (See here for Top 10 Most Important Rules of Email Netiquette) by your understanding of ‘net tools, and by your imagination.

These are the basic - and some not-so-basic - tactics for a suc- cessful ‘net marketing email discussion list . Properly used, they make the difference between a “dog” and a successful email discussion list and marketing website. The best approach is to start with only these simple procedures, then grow into more ad- vanced techniques as you learn.

The essential difference between a “dog” and a successful email discussion list and marketing website is that the latter is more than just the site; it’s a coordinated, purpose-driven (strategy) set of activities (tactics) that reach out into the net market- ing world to produce results. The physical site with its inform- ation and promotional materials is simply a part of this overall engine. Without a complete strategy and clearly stated tactics, the website will generate low volumes of inquiries and results and will fail to meet expectations. But, as in any other market, clearly defined goals and activities allow you to control its destiny, reaching out to bring in new business and grow.

High Tech, with all the bells and whistles, isn’t the smartest way to go. Remember that your conveying information, You’re NOT looking to show off all the latest multi-media techniques UNLESS you’re a multi-media discussion list

http//www.cgispy.com has a FREE Forum System allows you to have a public page where people can post and view messages in spec- ific categories. As an admin you can customize the look, change text, add images, edit messages and make your board more inter active. You can have up to 10 categories, display 50 messages at a time per category. There are many other “pre-built” offerings on the net, and it’s just a matter of finding the one that suits you. And it’s a recommended way to get started for a newbie and then you again grow into more advanced techniques as you learn.

Creative Ways to Get Quality Incoming Links

There are more ways to generate links to your pages than just exchanging them. Create quality links by doing the following:

Get your site listed on large directories like Open Directory Project and Yahoo Directory. There is evidence that these listings can serve to improve your PageRank on Google considerably.

Write a press release about your website. Submit it to online newswires like PRWeb.com or Click2NewSites.com. You can also submit to newspapers that run their stories on their websites.

Join associations related to your business or field of specialty. Many of these associations will link to their members.

Have your articles with your byline published on other websites. Submit your articles to sites that host free content.

Link the various pages of your website together. Your most important links should be on all your pages for easy navigation and to increase your link popularity. You should also link to relevant information on your other pages, when appropriate. It seems that internal links may not carry as much weight as links from outside your website, but do use them.

Create an informative and useful site. If your website is good, people will WANT to link to you. You won’t need to ask them.

Offer testimonials for products and services related to your industry. Many websites will give links in return for testimonials. For example, if you are a bookkeeper, provide testimonials for various bookkeeping-related software and tools.

Recommended software tools to automate submitting and link creation: Blogs AutoFiller.

4 Ways To Get More Traffic To Your Web Site

For most people, building a web site is easy. Even a 10 year old can add all the bells and whistles. But for some reason, getting people to visit your site often proves to be a little more difficult. In fact, it’s not at all unusual for a web site owner to never recieve a single visitor and soon give up any plans to have a successful site.

So how can you boost your web site’s traffic? According to Internet Marketing Consultant Gaston Collins at http://www.GastonCollins.com - there are a few quick ways to get traffic for a very minimal cost, but one of the first things you should do is setup a web site stats system that will allow you to track where your visitors come from. “It’s important to know what pages your visitors will be coming from to visit your site. Otherwise you won’t know what wotks and what doesn’t,” Gaston says.

So with that out of the way for now, let’s look at some ways to get traffic. First of all, you can use the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) method. Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing are the most popular PPC search engines.

Second, you can get free traffic by marketing your site through organic search engines. The major players are Google, Yahoo, and MSN - in that order.

The third way to get traffic to your site is through various methods of posting links to your site around the internet. The top methods of choice for this is contributing useful information to message boards and writing articles.

Finally we’ll discuss an often over-looked method of traffic generation, which is Ebay. You can look all day long, but you may not find a larger, more laser-targeted source of traffic at such a low price.

Maximize Traffic with These Simple Steps

Before you can decide if you need more traffic on your site you first need to know what it is. Traffic refers to the number of hits that you are getting on your site. If you are getting lots of hits then you are getting lots of traffic but the thing to remember is that you can never have too much. Even if you are getting a good amount of visitors your numbers could still be better.

There is only one way to make money online and that is to generate traffic. If you are not getting the visitors you can’t be making the money. It is that simple. So how can you generate traffic to your site? All you need to do is learn a little about pay-per-click (PPC) as well as search engine optimization (SEO).

There are a few different methods of SEO that you can use in your business. The first is the most simple and that is to start writing relevant content. The use of keywords is one of the most powerful ways that you can drive traffic to your website. The smart webmasters have articles written for their site that have these certain keywords in them. The search engines like Google and Yahoo and Alta Vista pick up on these keywords and then show your pages in the results shown to people looking for info online. It is a simple concept that you can use to generate millions of hits instantly.

If you are looking to generate FREE traffic online then all you have to do is start exchanging links with other people or get your links posted on other sites. You can use forums, message boards, blogs or any other sites online. Try getting in touch with people who run sites with similar interests to yours. See if they would be willing to post your link on their resource or links page, you can even offer to post their link on yours in return. This is a massively powerful way to generate FREE traffic and boost your rankings in the search engines and thereby boost the traffic you are seeing each day.

Then there is pay-per-click. This is the perfect solution for those in e-commerce. When you are thinking about going the pay-per-click you should check out the options at Google Adwords and Yahoo Overture as these are the most widely used pay-per-click options. These two are the best because they work with all of the search engines not just one or two. This means that you have your ads getting out there to the most people all over the world. It is vital that you do a little math before you get into pay-per-click. You need to know how much you can afford to pay per click, the goal is to still be making a profit!

There are many different search engine optimization techniques out there for you to choose from and each one has its own set of pros and cons. It is up to you to do your homework and learn which solution is right for your business. The Internet offers a vast selection of opportunities that anyone can make use of so get out there and start generating more traffic today!

get free targeted traffic, and how you can adopt the same method
to get tons of free targeted traffic to your new or already
existing business.

Without any doubt, yahoo mail site is getting a lot of online
traffic today, with about 2 millions visits per day and number 2
ranking in alexa survey, then you know that this site is a clear
leader.

Most of the traffic are free, not because they are running an
affiliate program, but because of proper business positioning,
they provide what people always use and enjoy.

One of the phrases for assessing yahoo mail free e-mail services
is “check yahoo mail”, which has become a hot profitable keyword
for webmasters.

Today you can;

check yahoo mail and get protection against spam and viruses.

yahoo mail site because they can’t do without yahoo products.

But what can you provide that will be in hot demand?.

Think of your work experience, ideas, hobby, or just any
knowledge you know, and then start from there.

But more importantly, you need to search for information
connected with your chosen idea or knowledge that people search
for often, but are not really targeted by webmasters.

can benefit them, not sales letters. Check yahoo mail site and
see what I’ am talking about, keep the aspect of sales to the
background and provide information first, make yourself a
solution provider.

When they come to love and trust you, they will buy from you.

Tips to boost traffic, increase website visibility, and let the world know you exist

Directories help locate websites within specific or definite categories. The difference between search engines and directories is that, directories feature only vetted websites, sites that have a certain standard and contain information of substance.

One of the aims of using directories is to boost traffic. To achieve this, one must choose to be featured in large, organized directories like Yahoo, DMOZ, and LookSmart. These will drive highly targeted traffic to you site (subject specific), increase significantly the link popularity, and Google PageRank.

To maximize exposure:

• Find a category that is most relevant to your website. The category and subcategories must totally fit the subject of your site and its purpose. For example, if your site is health related business the site must feature under health and not business. Only then, will surfers seeking health related websites access yours. Do a keyword search that is relevant to your site on the directory. The directory will throw up categories relevant to the key words. Choose one which is suited in all aspects.

• Coin a title and description that will boost traffic not reduce it. The title must be “dead on.” It should include the most important key word and if possible begin with a letter towards the beginning of the alphabet. And, the 15-25 word description should succinctly summarize the purpose or functions of your site. While being descriptive and informative, try and weave in as many keywords pertaining to your site as possible.

• Purchase keywords from one of the pay-per-click search engines or directories.

• Make the website search engine friendly.

• Pay attention to text and image content. Heavy images reduce search engine visibility.

• Use back links on appropriate directories and trade or business listings. Check out the back links used by competitors.

• Add new content regularly. This encourages visitors and search engine spiders to return. Make sure the content is keyword rich.

• Start and maintain a web log or blog. This can become an active way to boost traffic while simultaneously disseminating information.

• Market your website by printing its address on business cards, paper bags, packaging and so on. Distribute an e-zine or updates as newsletters regularly to customers and business associates.

• Consider paying search engines for improved listings and fast appraisal of your site.

• Direct content towards search engines by adopting cloaking technology.

• Run advertisements on related web sites and mailing lists.

• Adopt a reciprocal link program.

Maximize traffic by monitoring your traffic regularly. Analyze visitor movements and frequencies. Find out what is effective and what is redundant. Use cookies efficiently. Understand technology and use it to the maximum. Keep updated on new innovations and developments. Write down a workable website marketing strategy.

There are simple steps to victory: be different, make sure your website is refreshing and delivers what it promises; create a network of supporters; be honest in your business ventures; deliver on time at affordable costs; be a learner all your life, constantly innovate your website to keep stride with changing times; carve out an exclusive niche and diversify in directions that are relevant to your business module.

Baxter Grabber - Advanced Landing Page Strategy

What you are about to read is the strategy for an advanced landing page concept called the Baxter Grabber. You will read what elements comprise the landing page as well as the one element that allows the Baxter Grabber to excel above and beyond any other landing page concept in existence today.

The purpose of the Baxter Grabber is to drive prospects (leads) into your sales process from free search engine traffic.

It all begins with the landing page design. The landing page begins with a compelling headline which follows traditional direct sales style headlines. The headline is followed by a compelling multimedia presentation. After the multimedia presentation, the format follows a short form sales letter. This means that there is an opening paragraph, followed by compelling benefit driven bullets, a closing paragraph and the lead capture form.

An example landing page: http://www.baxtergrabber.com

Now, let’s get into what makes the Baxter Grabber different.

Using a JavaScript overlay, the landing page masks keyword rich content pages designed to target the search engines with laser precision.

Let’s take a step back.

Most of us are familiar with programs like Ranking Power (http://www.rankingpower.com). These programs generate keyword rich doorway pages that the search engines love to index and rank highly. The problem with these systems is this… the pages are ugly, nonsensical, and are useless to 99.9% of the visitors that visit them. Most of us call this search engine spam. But, thinking outside the box, I discovered a way to use Ranking Power in a way that benefits both the site owner AND the visitor.

This is all detailed in the free Baxter Grabber report.

Now, you begin with your keyword research and develop a list of keywords that target the market you are attempting to sell to. You take this list and run it through the Ranking Power script. When you reach the template section of the script, you add the JavaScript overlay which in turn points to your multimedia rich landing page. You now let the script create the hundreds of keyword rich pages. If everything was done properly, you now have hundreds of keyword rich pages the search engines see; all the while your prospect sees the landing page you created.

Truly a win-win scenario.

While this may look difficult, it really isn’t. I’ve created a free 6 page online tutorial anyone can access at http://www.baxtergrabber.com. Every step of the process is detailed, all java code is presented, and a solution is given that automates the majority of this process for you.

Seven Red Hot Tips for Linking

1. Vary the keywords in your link ‘anchor’ text

Unless you provide only one product or service the chances are you will want to rank for many key phrases. One way to help achieve this objective is to change the link text you want all new sites to use periodically. Vary the anchor text slightly each time and by doing so you can cover more of your targeted key phrases. This approach can help your site rank for many keywords rather than just one or two.

If you do only provide one product or service on your web site it is still important to vary anchor text. If you sell ‘blue widgets’ then you could also use link text like ‘cheap blue widgets’ or ‘blue widget store’. This means your links take on a more natural feel and are much less likely to be penalised or filtered out by search engines for being ‘fake links’.

2. Set up your link information differently - create a link in context

Typically people set up their link information in a very similar way, however you could offer your link information with the hyperlink inside the description instead of at the beginning.

Imagine this is a description about your web site on a partner’s link page. Instead of a typical hyperlink followed by a description you could write a sentence describing your web site and then place “your descriptive hyperlink” inside it.

One reason for doing this is that it reads more naturally and search engines may value the link higher as it reads more like a narrative. Many webmasters will be happy to accept this style even if some do not. To cover yourself offer the link in context as a second option along with your regular link information, that way if some sites can’t support the layout you still get your link.

3. Vary where your links point

Try to vary where link partners point to on your site. It’s fine to have the majority of links pointing into your home page, however it can be beneficial to have some links pointing to other key pages on your web site as well. Taking this approach balances out your linking and can help raise the profile of more pages on your web site.

4. How to find potential link partners from your competitors

If a web site links to your competitors it may also link to yours, and in order to find these potential link partners you can use search engines. Not so long ago Google was useful for getting a lot of back link information about a site. Recently Google’s back link data is a lot less forthcoming and it now tends to show only a tiny percentage of the sites that are linking combined with a lot of internal link data. Whether the few web sites Google shows us are the ones it finds important or whether they are in fact red herrings we cannot say for certain. I would assume the latter.

Currently Yahoo is a better portal to check for backlinks. To generate a list of linking web sites on Yahoo simply go to http://www.yahoo.com and type the following into the Yahoo search bar.

linkdomain:www.mycompetitorwebsite.com

This will deliver up to date link information as read by Yahoo. The only downside with the information is that one site may appear many times if it is giving multiple links.

5. Alternate your description text

This is often overlooked, but there is no real advantage to be had if the description text supporting your inbound links is always identical. To avoid the possibility of a description ever being seen as ‘duplicate content’ alternate it when you can. If you combine it with varied anchor text [as in tip 1] you’re heading in the right direction.

6. Link to good related content from your web site

It seems like an obvious thing to say, but with so many people caught up in link exchanging you sometimes wonder if we’re losing site of the basics. If you have something useful to say on your site and can back it up with a useful link to another web site then do so. Not every link has to be reciprocated. This resourceful linking will allow your visitors to read around the subject. Linking to informative related content is useful for visitors and search engines quite like it too.

7. Seek out directory links

Links from good web directories can be some of the best links you can get for your web site. Aaron Wall has a ‘directory of directories’ at http://www.directoryarchives.com where you will find a great selection of search engine friendly directories. Some of the directories are free to get listed in whilst others may charge a fee.
